Hi all,
New to the forum.
Looking for some advice on suitable rods for tidal river fishing. I live in Sussex and the sections I wish to fish are never particularly wide (20-30 yards) but pretty strong (including the tides). There are some slower spots but quite a few I am predicting could require anywhere between a 4-8oz lead.
Targeting carp primarily but would like to have a go at the barbel as well along the way. More specifically, I am interested in the length, test curves/ action people use, and whether anyone goes at these sections with stronger barbel rods instead of carp rods.
No specific budget, just looking for the right kit for the job.

What you looking for is a heavy action graphite rod without guides.i think it's known as a interline rod. The nylon or braid runs through the tube of the rod. Should be able to cope with what you want out of your rod. Don't have any expierance targeting Barbel, lucky enough to pick the of one up when fishing.
Try one of your local shops might be able to give you more insight 👍

You just need a normal carp rod with a rest curve of 2 1/2 lb or over. Arun angling would be ideal to speak to.

Depends on the bank, but 12ft can help get your tips up over the top of the bank side vegetation.

12ft 2lb 4oz capable of casting and i mean casting 6oz weights and 5oz feeders just the job.

Personally I would go for a 2.75lb rod as Barbel unlike carp will fight to utter exhaustion and in that event take an eternity to recover more Barbel are killed because people dont rest them and treat them like carp and feel it kick and let it go only for it to go belly up and die 50 yards down stream
so its in the fishes best interest you bully them and land them fast for their own good the rods I use are Daiwa Powermesh Barbel 2.75 fantastic action with 12 to 15lb lines but sadly hard to get hold of I have heard good things about the new Korum rods worth checking out

Gerry is bang on re fish going belly up through clueless carpers not looking after their catch correctly, a fare few have been lost from the arun because of this. If fishing these tidal rivers with a big variation of depth between high and low tide it critical to know you get to a suitable spot to land and return your capture safely. Jetfire and Gerry's rods recommendations can only comment on chimera which is superb as is drennan Martin bowler big river 2.25tc but has a lot more backbone than many higher tc carp rods for lobbing 8/10oz leads or feaders.

Thanks, all good advice regarding the returning of fish. I fish for all species so they will have plenty of time and care when they come out and go go back.

I always mention a couple of years ago a prolonged scrap I had with a 14lb.6oz Barbel I had done a 48 session hour at Beeston weir snag city !! I had lost most of my 4 ozs weight and feeders so as I was slowly packing up thoroughly fed up at losing my breakoff feeders and weights I saw about 85 to 95 yards down stream a bend with a bit of a slack spot I gave it the biggun and managed to drop it bang on I was just struggling up the bank with my shelter when I heard my Nash Siren screaming well I kid you not I had to battle that fish against the power of the water from the weir and when it got near the net it powered away at least 3 times on netting it I saw it was a PB I unhooked the fish my pal was standing there so quick snap with my phone and as I had around 5 feet of strong current at my feet I bank sticked my deep barbel 30" spoon net to rest looked at the time and carried on packing up checking the fish was upright facing the flow every now and then
well I completely packed the car all that was left was the fish in the net I looked at my watch and realised 45 mins had passed I had a look in the net and looking down marvelled at the width and size of this superb fish
AT THAT EXACT MOMENT the fish belched out a large bubble of air !!!!!!!! thats 45 mins since it had been out of the water
that taught me a lesson that day

Anything too stiff isn't going to be much fun playing a Barbel on however you're looking to lob a big old lump of lead (potentially) so you'll need a bit of backbone. For river carping I've used 3lb Ballistas and 3.25lb Torrix, for "big river" Barbel I use my Torrix 2.25 Barbel rods however, if I were to buy one set of rods to do both (on a budget) I'd probably go for something from Korum/Wychwood/ESP. My friends who use Korum rods have all been very pleased with them. Getting hold them (or anything else similar) seems to be the main issue, same with Daiwa Powermesh. Maybe those Extractor type rods would be suitable. I've not used one though so couldn't say.

Are you going to be fishing the Arun?
If so 3lb test curve will be fine ... You have more problems with logs and raft of weed then fish

I've just moved back locally to the Arun and Rother so that's where I am aiming to go. The Adur isn't too far away either but I am less familiar with that river. Thanks that is really helpful regarding the test curve

13' 2.75 Hi S Heavy Water Special. Absolutely superb rods that initially feel softer than 2.75, but load them up with an 8oz lead and you can feel the power down the blank. Beautiful to play fish on too, the 13' length allowing for a softer, more sensitive tip.
I bought them for the tidal Trent, but they're so good I sold my S Lite Carp rods as I'll be using them for Carping too.
