At the risk of looking like a complete clown...
I'm trying to be scientific and calculate how much backing line I need to load two spools with, to then top them off by splitting half a spool of braid onto each. I've done this before and it seemed to work out OK, although this time around I can't get my head around it. Bear with me here...
Spool capacity is stated as 230m/0.4mm, or 340m/0.35mm. Now this is my first stumbling block. 0.35 as a percentage of 0.4 is 87.5%, so in theory if I wound on 230m of 0.35mm mono the spool would be 87.5% full. Rough calculation (230/87.5 x 100) means 263m would be needed to fill the spool with .35 diameter. So how does the stated capacity of 340m/0.35mm make sense here?!
I think the last time I did this, I worked it out something like this:
Spool capacity = 340 x 0.35 = 119
I buy a 300m spool of 0.33mm, so 300 x 0.33 = 99 backing.
Capacity 119 less backing 99 leaves 20.
Braid I am using is 0.19mm diameter, so 20/0.19 = 105m of braid on each reel.
However, if I had used 230m x 0.4mm as the calculation for the spool capacity, that only comes to 92 (230 x 0.4).
As I say, I spooled some reels up earlier this year using a method similar to the above and it seemed to work out OK, but I just cannot get my head around it this time because of getting different values for spool capacity.
If a spool held 100m/0.4mm, you would expect the capacity with 0.2mm to be 200m, no?!
Someone please put me out of my misery!!

Google it. There are some decent calculators online

Nope, fraid not. Its not a linear scale.
You need to work out the volume of the spool, so nr2h or pi x radius, squared, then x the height or length.
You'll see a 100m length of .4mm is 12566mm3
A 100m length of .2mm is 3141mm3.
Calculator.net have a good calculator for volume.

Blimey my head just exploded
If you have a spare spool, I'd just put half the braid on then fill with backing line, once done transfer to the wanted spool, easy

That's how I would do it lol

How do I know what is half a 275m spool of braid though

I'd buy another spool of braid lol
130 odd yards is just a good whack

It's for barbel fishing bud, I've bigger problems if I have 100m out
The reason I am asking is because i've previously trashed a spool of braid getting it wrong. Amazed it worked out OK last time

Find a big field
get someone to hold one end whilst you go and unroll it get the other give them the Other ends to hold So they have both ends and walk out to get the middle And cut it lol
Then roll them back onto the spool it 2
Simple innit lmao.

I have a mate who does that

I count the handle turns as I know my reels load 108cm of line per full turn.

That will vary though as the spool becomes filled with line

And how it fills the spool will vary with the diameter of the line, not an accurate method.

Surely the easiest way is to wrap the amount of braid you want around some sticks, tie your mono onto the braid and continue to wrap until you're at the linear spool capacity.
Wind it onto the reel? Repeat.
