Always been a fan of Mr Balls,.... Met him a few times over the years such a knowledgeable gent. Hope it sells well.
May I ask a very naive/silly question about books. As someone who knows nothing about the book or print business.
Why do they have a limited amount can't they just print to order. Why can't they just keep whatever they need to print on file and produce to order.
Hasn't technology changed enough that Books are easier to produce

I hope the proof reading has improved since the first edition. I found it impossible to read with so many mistakes it looked like it was written by a 4 year old.

Printing is still very expensive, especially if you want a nice finish. By limiting the numbers it also ensures they maintain a reasonable price by managing the demand and from a buyers perspective can make buying the book an investment as if limited numbers the price will go up in the future, see Dave Lanes Obsession and Darryl Pecks book as examples with both having limited runs and now reaching silly amounts on 2nd market

The 2nd hand resale doesn't benefit the printer or author though. But it get what you mean. Sold a waiting for waddle for silly money recently

Fishing books don't sell very well nowadays and quite a few carp books have sold merely a couple of hundred copies. Take Crowood Press for example, there are unsold carp books on their website that were published in 1997. Rather than print say a thousand copies and have them sitting on shelves for a decade it is more sensible to print just 5-6 hundred and advertise them as limited edition.

The resale doesn't help the printer but it will help with demand and as mentioned elsewhere, judging the demand and catering to this makes economic sense. The resale ay help demand on the basis that someone may purchase a limited edition but wouldn't a general copy printed in the thousands

when you ask a printer to print a book the more you print the more it will cost YOU ! to have them printed
I have a mate that wrote a coin reference book and had 500 copies mostly pictures and A4 hard bound that cost him £10,00 up front too so each book was £20 cost to him obviously if he had 1000 copies they would probably be £17 to him each so 17 grand !! thats A LOT of money to put up front
