Hi there currently looking two new reels to go on a set of 3.25lb Harrison Torrix's I have picked up. I think I have my mind made up to go for Daiwa tournament st but can't decide which size would balance the rod better. If it's is any use the rod has been fitted with 50mm butt ring. What are people's opinions of these reels.

Can't understand the fascination with them they are horrible to use.
Yes they last for ages but any modern reel at half the price will be so much nicer to use.
The young trendies that say they are so good but weren't even born when they were first released will no doubt disagree with me though...
Why not try out some of the newer reels, if you have a go side by side there is no competition.

For a 3.25lb Torrix I would choose the 5000.
For a 3.25lb Torrix I would choose the 5000.

I have the 5000ts and a set of original SS3000s - wouldn't change then for the world, but do agree that you pay for the cult following rather than the bells and whistles of the newer reels. Mine are full of character and whirl etc. but if I gave other reels the punishment these get, they'd only lad a season.
Guess it depends on what you're looking for

5000ts will balance nicely. I have them on mine, with 40mm ringing.
I bought them for an overgrown water where i didnt want to be dragging my basias through bushes. They do the job. But the are massively over rated. Ive kept them on my old torrix for smaller waters etc. But if i was buying again, id go for the new emblem scw45s, no question
In fact, if it was fonancially viabl , id sell the basias and the 5000td and get 2 sets of the new emblems
