Hi guys, I am fishing a new water and still trying to find my way around it. I put the deeper out and as you would expect, it picked fish up off the bottom, so my initial tactic was to get the zigs out.

I found a few clear spots, but they were just past a load of weed. As I put the adjustable zig out I just could not get it to rise. I am assuming that the weed was causing friction on the line and holding it back.

Any advice, apart from fixed length zigs? I prefer an adjustable as it's easier to cast and gives flexibility.

You could try the lead on a long boom buddy?
I'd just use fixed length if it's less than 12 ft deep.
Landing them on an adjustable (i.e. with the lead still on) in weed will be a proper nightmare anyway imo.
I wont drop leads intentionally unless I absolutely have to and zigs in weed is one of those occasions.

You want a line that doesn't take on water and as neutral in bouyancy as you can find. Drill a 4mm hole through a wine cork lengthways and have it behind the lead. Use a boom also on the lead if it's needed like Yonny said.

Were you seeing fish icons on your Deeper?

If so then I would learn how to actually read a sonar return and turn off fish icons. You will be chasing loads of shadows otherwise.

There comes a time with weed and zigs where you have to give the weed best and fish differently. They don't really go together.

Rule on our lake. When the weed gets to a certain level all zigs are banned. Seems to suit everyone

I wasn't landing it in weed, there is a fairly big clear spot past it. It's the line from the lead to the reel that's getting the friction I think.

I'll try a bigger boom anyway, cheers.
