Evg, I've been prebaitng my local river, trying to draw fish to a spot that's not a natural holding area. Been at it for a month, tigers, maize, vitalin, hemp etc.
Interested on your thoughts on when to feed boilies prior to fishing? A week? Always? A day or 2? Want to use 20mms & pop ups snowman style to avoid huge head of bream, other species. Not competing with other anglers, more about holding transient fish long enough for a bite or 2.
Average stock, lots of 20's & a few bigger fish.

If theres loads of bream you'll only want to feed boilies. Boilies should have been part of the original mix IMO, I only leave them out the first two baiting trips, just to ensure I clear the bottom a bit first. Bang them in now (if youre planning on fishing the opening) and when you fish ONLY fish with boilies. If the carp are feeding down there then you dont want to attract the bream in and ruin your sleep!!

I'm actually in Holland, you'll find bream in rain puddles over here. Generally, if there's water, there's bream. Mainly because the lakes are non-commercial so there's no netting etc. Also asp, catfish, orfe and ide.
Anyway, I've fished the river a lot, more holding areas. Carp have been caught on along this stretch (it's in front of my house - hence the Q) and I thought I'd just keep baiting it to stimulate a 'bird table effect' and fish it for the odd night...too many boats during the day. The locals tend to use cheap boilies which I may try in larger sizes after soaking them in liquids etc. I'll also keep on the tigers - 1kg boilies / tigers per baiting session? Far bank, middle, near bank over 20m is what I've been doing. Chods seem to slow the slabs down too.

just bait heavy few days before... 2 days of baiting and than fishing... on rivers sometimes even huge amounts of bait will not hold fish for a long time...

Big boilies and tigers to avoid the bream. Tigers are great for filling bream up quickly, and putting them off the feed for a few days. Bream are not built to deal with eating tiger nuts, they can't crush them up like a carp can. Personally, I would not waste your boilies, until you know carp are visiting your spot. Until then just bait it with tigers. No seeds or smaller particles. The tigers will bring the carp, then just keep the boiled bait going in daily after the carp start clearing your spot regularly. Once the carp are on it, the bream will not be problem.
If you want to fish it at night like you said, bait it very late in the evening every time. Don't bait up in the morning, or carp will get used to visiting your spot in the morning for free food. It's simple fishing, but simple little details like this can make a big difference to your results. Sack of tigers and as many boilies as you can afford.

The was a thread many years ago on the Cemex Forum (theanglersforum) that was about pre-baiting big rivers and its always stuck in my mind what you said on there TCarper -
Keep it VERY simple mate, scale is more important than fandangley ingredients.
Fishmeal... Binder...Trusted Flavour... Get rolling.

Re: Evening.
Yes, I've been baiting at last light or first hour of darkness. Also because the boat traffic would wash the bait all over the place anyway.
Re: River Scale.
Similar to the Cambridgeshire Ouse or Upper Thames (Dorchester) - with a lot of offshoots but the stretch I'm baiting to see if I can get 'something going' is probably twice the average canal width.
Any ideas on quantities of tigers? I know the received wisdom with tigers is less is more but on the river what would you say's enough..over a 20m stretch...a 1lb....1kg? 2kg?
If I was bream fishing, I'd easily prebait with about 15 orange sized balls to pull fish into the area.
People use pigeon conditioner a lot, although a nightmare for nuisance species....it does attract carp if you leave it for a week until it reeks of vomit...and the buytric acid has come through. This clouds well and works brilliantly around pads, reeds (holding areas) - maybe I'll give the liquid a go too without the seed.
Any thoughts on peanuts? Peanut meal?
