After watching loads of YouTube videos recently as I'm on the comeback trail it's apparent just how today's must do is feel the lead down and get as hard a drop as possible.
Lots of well known celeb anglers talk about casting up to 20 times to make sure it's perfect.
Surely if doing this and I do get why they do it, they must just be casting hookbaits only? Couldn't think of anything worse than tying sticks or bags on 20 times?

A lot of modern rigs are quick release so you can swap prepped bags/sticks quite easily. Can be for a good reason ie, heavy weed and clear spots but people seem to be hung up on it even when they don't have to be...within reason.

You can use bare lead to find the spot - clip up and then attach the rig

It's why I don't use PVA mate.
today's must do is feel the lead down and get as hard a drop as possible.
Not necessarily the hardest drop. The "must do" is simply to know what you're fishing on. On gravel pits I actively avoid the hardest spots, instead fishing just off them into the softer stuff. Miles more productive imo.

Spot on Yonny.
I find it bemusing when anglers are adamant they must find the hardest spots they can and fish pop ups or wafters over them. Even more amusing when the fish in the lake all have black mouths and pecs. Pretty bloody obvious they are up to there arses feeding in silt. Different if they have clean, hard rubbery lips from feeding on hard ground.
The last thing I want to fish on is hard gravel, far too blatant.
If you do what everyone else does you can expect to get the same results as everyone else. He who dares! (Sometimes wins but definitely learns more)

Some times you've got no option. Last year the weed in one of my waters was horrific. Half the swims were shut as they were unfishable, in the others if you didnt get a fairly solid drop then you were guaranteed to be hung up in weed. The hard spots might not be the most productive, but at that time they were the only places you could realistically present a hookbait.
The other issue i find with hard spots is that obviously they tend to be more cleaned off, so your rig isn't just more obvious to the carp, its more obvious to swans and diving birds as well.

I think ultimately we're just looking for something different most of the time.
On weedy pits we're looking for clear, on a clear pit we're looking for weed, on a clay pit we're looking for silt pockets and on a silt pit we're looking for rock hard ground lol.

Clip your line up once you found your spot with a bare lead, depending onhow big it is it can be easy or hard to hit, but once your clipped up you should be hitting the same spot. then attach your pva if required, as others have mentioned this can affect feeling the lead down and therefore some people dont add any pva extras to there rigs . My advice really would be as above and use pva dependant on what your trying to achieve in your rig,
I would assume the vids that you are watching are on weedy pits and they are fishing in clear holes in the weed. In a situation like that if the cast didnt feel down correctly and donk on the clear spot you would not have a bait presented and therefore not actually stand a chance of catching. In a situation like that its very important, in other situations not so much.
