Rods wise, something from the Shimano TX range will suffice, no idea on reels as don't use baitrunners.

Might get a set of shimano big pit baitrunners in budget. Seen em for as low as 100 quid at times. Sure they'll be a shop up for a deal now too. 20 wraps is an underarm flick with them and a 3lb/3 1/4lb test rod. Either that or just get some 10000 size shimano baitrunners.

Does he already carp fish ? If he doesn't is there's any reason he does not want second hand as he may not enjoy it

I don't see any wrong using standard UK setup. Just up breaking strain on mainline to say 15/18lbs or .40 should be fine

he does a bit of carp and pike fishing his rods and reels are quite old and he just fancies updating them so hes looking for decent rods and br reels for around £ 100 each
i sugested getting some of the windcast reel and maybe the shimano tx rods

He should really consider going down the used route, especially with rods. You can get so much more for your money byying second hand

Went to France last year, mate of mine was using Diawa Black Widow rods, he loves them.
He caught the biggest fish of the week at 52lb and the rods performed superbly.
Good deal on three here, which will give your mate a bit more to spend on better quality reels than the most basic Shimmies......
