What are peoples preferences for snag leaders? I have been using pb products shield and it has been ok, but being mono it's got quite a large diameter. Are heavy braided snag leaders as abrasion resistant? I have been looking at pb's Hollow Kevlar, but it is expensive and I'm not 100% convinced.

0.40 mono or above straight through, pline cxx is extremely durable. I prefer as few knots as possible.

Try tapered main line. The 12lb 0.33 version I use has 15m of 40lb 0.5 at each end. Once I knew how much backing I needed i can just fill the spool up np. No knots and it casts superbly. 40 wraps quite easy with the tx2 intensity rods testing it.

Thanks for the replies. Maybe I should give a bit more info on the specific fishing situation. It's for when I fish far bank margins in french rivers. I did try heavy mono straight though, but the stretch was too much when fish were hooked, especially when back leading due to boat traffic. I use braided mainline now, so did quite like the mono to give a slight shock absorbing factor when playing fish. I'm just planning our next trip so thinking how I could improve things maybe I will just have to try it on one rod and see how it goes.

When fishing the river lot i used powerpro braid and 46lb pro gold as a leader, with mono leaders its the diameter thats important, i found the pro gold in 46lb to be a more durable leader than the pb shield you have tried .
Quite a few years ago now we tested numerous leaders by attaching them to 2lb of lead and moving it backwards and forward over a knife the best leader was a french leader in 0.7mm dia called dressen x it lasted around 70 strokes before the lead dropped to the ground, the pro gold is a bit thinner around 0.6mm dia it lasted around 60, pb shield was quite a bit less. Surprisingly a couple of flouros i tried in like for like diameters weren't as durable as the pro gold
All the mono leaders fray quickly but due to diameter retain a large amount of their linear strength, i also did the same test with several braid leaders 45lb quick silver 50lb armacord these faired a lot worse going with as little as 7 strokes, they are thinner so any damage takes away more of their linear strength.
My test may be a little misleading as most snags wont be as abrasive as the penknife i used but i was happy with the heavy mono's and my mate who lived in the lot et garonne department for 15 years also swore by the pro gold.

To throw a spanner in the works im not sure if it is still available in that breaking strain but it could be worth phoning GLT direct on 0121 373 4523
Failing that look at other mono's in a higher breaking strain id be looking at at least 0.5mm dia

What knot do you use for connecting the leader.
I have problems with slipping of the knot (Mahon, etc) with PB Shield with PB Control Mono.
With PB Red Ant icw Korda Subline I did not have the same problems.

I use a back to back 5 turn grinner and never had any problems with it 👍

Mahin knot. also sometimes called the carrot knot due to its shape. best for braid to mono leaders as the tag ends come out the same side

I had the exact same problem with you when i tried tying pb shield to pb mainline the knots slipped way before the breaking strain it didn't matter what knot i tried .
The knot i used most for my snag leaders was the albright knot
I think there must be some sort of coating on the pb lines i did find i could get a good knot strength with the pb shield and other mainlines and likewise a decent strength with the pb mainline tied to my pro gold leader.
To be honest i ended up throwing the pb shield away i didn't want to take the risk and i didn't think it was as good as my pro gold leaders, i did use the 0.35mm pb mainline but only a a casting line in the uk on venues without a leader as to be fair it was ok for this.

Had exactly the same thing with Shield. The knots would slip, didn't matter which type of knot, everything went under extreme pressure. I agree with Dave, I'm convinced it was the coating.

Another vote for dressen mono.very abrasion resistant. Use it in 30lb f(0.50mm) for shockleader.its a dual mono similar to sufix duraflex
