Instant carpers and trophy hunters, one and the same. Its a sad state of affairs where instant gratification overrides any thought of consequences. All this talk of RH fisheries, perhaps we need more of them at lower prices to satisfy the needy and protect our own waters.

I don't believe it, we would have heard of this before them via social media etc. They've took one instance of a crime, added 78 million to it, and tried to scare their readership into buying more papers.

I agree, the article covers numerous incidents that take place over nearly 10 years, some of which are completely unrelated to angling, and tries to make a story out of it. Load of ******** imo.

If you are approaching the real organised poachers, of course you want a stab vest.
Story has been twisted as if you read it it says the guns were found on the poachers set line...no doubt hooked on after drifting downstream. Typical media spin to cause a panic

If it's the same one I heard of they weren't snagged up, but hidden where the lines were attached to the bank

Wow.. Flashback. They may have multiplied it by a 1,000, but its still a serious issue that mirrors another era. Fisheries organisations in the USSR already had scaringly similar incidents starting in the 50s (and they still happen today). Fisheries inspectors caught fishermen with dynamite (hardly stuns a fish), guns, grenades and all kinds of weird "tools." Soviet students even founded volunteer vigilante groups (nature conservation guards - or druzhiny po ohrane prirody) that got to deal with similar types of agression. As it happened, they ended up needing special training to deal with agressive poachers and often they weren't allowed to 'do their rounds' because they were frequently attacked and/or stabbed.
Back then people were hungry for food. Today, we are hungry for sportsmanship (or whatever your motives are).
Many similarities though. Makes you wonder.

In Eastern Europe the fisheries bailiffs (equivalent of the EA enforcement teams) carry firearms due to the threat from the organised gangs...if they are operating here then no doubt there is the same threat level.

I do whole heartedly agree that people doing such jobs should be given protective gear and sent out in mobs rather than individually.

polish destroyed a lake near to me with some very big northern very hush hush english carp, they took everything bream the lot, even the otters were getting pissed of with them coming over here taking all there fish, they had no ticket, and told the balif to just f off

In Italy as well, firearms and handcuffs.
Last summer in the lake I fish a carp angler got handcaffed and brought to the station.
