Hi, new to the forum

Just getting into carp fishing having spent years fishing for other species.

A mate is selling up and I can get a good deal on his old stuff which I know will all be good.

I have a choice of buying his old Daiwa SS2600 or SS3000 reels. They're well used and not the best cosmetically but otherwise sound and I know they were built to last.

Which would be the better choice for a 12' 2.75 rod? Haven't bought the rods yet but I'll be looking for a nice playing action and only need cast up to 80 yards max. I really want the reels to balance nicely with the rods and give plenty of feel playing fish in.

All feedback much appreciated.

Both great reels. I reckon the 3's are better on a 12 ft 2.75, they'll cope with anything.

Buy the 3000's sell them and buy decent reels

SS3000 coupled with free spirit ES 12ft 2.75 rods nicely balanced excellent “players” rods that will cover all but extreme range fishing. I use with esp Syncro line in 12 or 15lb breaking strain line depending on weed and snags.

OK so I've taken the SS2600 out of the reckoning but I've also been offered a set of Daiwa ISO 5500's, the old ones with the red livery not the new black ones.

So it's a toss up between:

ISO
SS3000

Age and condition-wise they are about the same, they're reasonable condition and maybe ten years or so old.

Have to say I prefer the look and feel of the SS3000 but will the ISO perform better e.g. casting distance, longevitiy, drag etc?

Casting distance will be pretty much identical. The drag is decent on both reels.
The ISO's will feel smoother but the SS3's will last longer imo.

The ISO has fast drag which might not be to your liking. It goes from free running to locked up in under a full turn. The drag on the SS3000 is a lot slower, 3-5 full turns from memory.

Personally, I preferred my ISO's to my ss3000 that they replaced.

Now that's funny.

Buy both get them serviced stash one set and in years to come sell either or both sets and yet money than you paid for.

Both great reels but do get them serviced makes all the difference.
