Hi all. Considering either of these reels. My question is what do you get extra on the power aeros and is it worth the extra money. I know the aeros have the new line guard which is supposed to prevent line going behind the spool. Do the ci4s have the same line guard? Any advice, reviews would be greatly appreciated. Cheers.

You think? I think that the drag is one of the better features tbh, the drag cap is pap though!
Try a new iso if you think the shimanos are quick

I used to have the Power Aeros and I could never see much of a diference between them and the Ultegra. The Power Aero is made from diecast aluminum, the Ultegra is made from CI4. The Power Areo has 8+1 ball bearings and Ultegra has 5+1. Power Aero has 1 speed line lay and the Ultegra has 2 speed. I think the Ultegra is slightly lighhter than the Areo.

Why would you want a drag that is soo quick, that you can't sensibly play a fish properly?
I own the older model Ultegra 5500 ci4 which has both the quick drag (baitrunner) , and normal sensitive drag (it's fantastic to play fish on with fine adjustment).
I love the quick drag - it's great when you're adjusting your indicators, packing the rods away etc. , but you can't sensibly play fish on quick drag in tight swims, PERIOD!

So damned would I buy any reel that only has a Quick Drag.

I dont think that they are too quick at all tbh. Its down to personal preferences but im sure that some other brands have slower drags

Yes, it's a predicament we are now left with.
The manufactures don't care - it's cheaper for them to make a quick drag only reel.
Probably go for the shimano baitrunner ci4 , that has both a quick (albeit the cap on the back baitrunner style) and normal drag.

The XTD's had the line guard issue not the Ci4 XTC reels. The Ci4 & Power Aero use the same spools. Certainly not the price between the two reels worth the difference that is for sure. More than happy with my Ci4 XTC 14000 reels. The only way I would have the Power Aero's now is on a deal in one of my local shops where they are doing 3 x Shimano Power Aero 14000 reels & 3 x Greys Xcelerate 12' full cork rods for £1500 all in.

But after having them for quite a while now and caught some nice big fish using them. They have grown on me a lot.
I have gone back to my 90's style of using a combination of controlling the slow down of the spool by dabbing with my finger and using the QD.
Works for me and I like it.

I have used Daiwa reels most of my life other than a few Shimanos 8000 gt etc. And I was adamant I was going to use Shimano reels for a change. I tried the mags and a few others and finally settled on some old Power Aeros and I love them.
I do not like bling, horrible
These new Power Aeros look good to me, aluminium body too, let me know how you go on
Shimano line lay is superb
All modern reels are just far to blingy for me. Build them with 20 years in mind, that's my biggest tip

I have the same feelings towards modern reels. Currently have the ultegra 14000 xtc with the front baitrunner. I can put up with this although I'd prefer the quick drag. However, the thing that's doing my head in is the fact the bale arm wo t open/close when the spool is out too far. Surely this doesn't happen on the power aeros??

Hi Mate,
I have the Power aeros xtb , bought them before the new Ci4 came out.
My mate bought the Ci4 and there is( besides some cosmetics and bearings)very little difference.
If i was in the market again I'd probably opt for the Ci4
Both have the same extended spool skirt in comparison the the XTD.
Mine are coming up 2 years old and so far they ain't missed a beat.
The line can still get behind the spool if you overfill them but that's easily cured by stripping some line off.
Once you're used to the fact you don't need to fill to the top of the spool lip they're fine.
Extremely smooth as you'd expect and so far no odd noises , grinding etc , the power aeros are sealed so there is no need for oiling internally , send back to shimano for service i guess.
I haven't noticed that with the spool extended that you cannot get the bail arm over so I guessing that these don't suffer with this.
The drag is quite quick and at first I thought it was too quick but i'm used to it now and it hasn't cost me any fish(you'd have to catch some for that to be an issue, lucky for me i never do)
On the whole I'm pleased with them and won't be changing anytime soon

With time passed by since the last post ,has anyone got any more thoughts on the below as currently debating between them myself ? Is it worth the extra money and is there any negatives of the reels ?
Currently have Daiwa 5000ts love then but the line lay and retrieve isn't exactly great .

I have the 14000 Ci4+ XTC. I actually sold my Daiwa 45 SCW's after two fecked up and all the grief I had getting them repaired (bearing failure on both) and after much deliberation, got the cheaper Shimanos. I've used them a lot and have been really impressed. Yes, very occasionally line can get behind the spool, but frankly it's user error causing that. They're light, feel very tight and the line lay is brilliant for distance work. The QD is just fine for me and has caused no issues when going from free spool to playing fish off the clutch. For the money, I think they're the best big pit you can buy at the moment. Only gripe I can think of is the bail arms could be thicker, so just take care if carrying them on a sling

I'm in a similar situation. Going to be ordering some custom built rods soon and previously had Daiwa Tournament S5000T's. I did consider getting Basia's but they are just a bit too much to spend for me. I was therefore going to either get another set of Tournies or Infiinitt XBR's.
I haven't had Shimano reels for carp fishing since my old Aero 6000 baitrunners 20 years ago (I have a Shimano match reel paired with my Acolyte float rod).
I do really like the look of the Shimano big pit reels but you hear so many negatives on both Basia's and Shimano reels, it becomes extremely difficult to choose.
