Weedy and deep with lots of severe drop offs (37 posts / 3,710 views)

Really struggling on my new synidate... it's a typical largish pit .

Lots of drop offs, from 5-6 to 30 and weedy... it's the soft weed so you can sometimes get a fairly decent thump / drop but a fish spy still shows a jungle.

I know a lot of the regulars get spots going with heavy baiting which is a option. I fish a lot of short sessions and my usual approach especially this time of year is bags / singles and chods.

If done fairly well with this on other lakes but just to add to head wreck the fish don't seem to show very much. It's also home to lots of bird life so this won't cut it I don't think.

Is the baiting heavy the only way? I guess I can get it done with pigeon conditioners etc? How long would this typically take?

Any help would be appreciated n

Fish in the deep bit, the weed won't be down there and the birds won't get any bait. If they're not showing in the shallower water definitely worth doing.

Have you not though about raking out some margin spots? I have done it on my syndicate and have had to stop throwing the rake as carp were coming in to see what was going on you be surprised at how many people ignore the margins when you watch others fishing

How deep is the weed, can you fish a short zig or a long tail balanced bait to rest on top?

Thanks for all the replies.... it does have weed in the deeps.

I'm defo going to try raking the margins. Also in regards to zigs they have crossed my mind but I guess I'd be looking at adjustable ones?

I've not had a load of experience with them but I'm sure I can figure them out

My fishing buddy lives right next to an old, extremely deep quarry, full of snags, old machinery and so on..

He does the marginal raking, and creates his own areas ,but drop offs are so severe and sloping,he uses the washing line method.. and flattened leads...he is called Green giant on here, maybe pm him as he's got lots of experience of fishing immense deep quarry lakes

(his one special,as stocked by Peter Mohan)..

Don't worry about the depth, go for it mate.
It is their home and will know every bit of that environment, deep bits and all.
Try different deep spots, different areas, don't go mad on bait application, so you don't feel ‘guilty ‘ by moving onto showing fish or a different area.

I Would seriously look at the deeper areas, possibly less dense weed down there, as less sun light penetrating down to those depths.

The carp definitely would be under less pressure and danger of getting caught at those 25-30 foot depths, as most people haven't got the bottle to try it, and the confidence to persevere with it, feeling a lead down for ages !

More consistent water temperature as well, and would be a great bet night time through to mid morning or so, as the move up into the shallower, more known and preferred shallow parts of your pit as the sun warms them up, and be seen feeding and moving about.
Also be a great area to concentrate on from late autumn through into the winter and into the early spring.

As and when you can see them in the edge, then you can watch and learn where they seem happy enough to feed, and set a trap or two.
Good luck with it

Good advice given here.

Myself have just got into a very special place, old pit...very deep in parts, proper history water..I am definitely going to give those deeper areas a good go...

Like said,it their home,so put a bait in/on it...and they'll find it...

I'm still struggling without a bite after maybe 8 nights.

I've been fishing in 20 foot on a nice clear spot I left on Sunday's afternoon and another angler went in and caught that night from that spot.

So I'm guessing I'm getting there!

Proper interesting water, scary when wading as it's crystal clear and the drop off is like the abyss.

Which brings me to ask for more advice... could I fish on the this slope?

Maybe gripper leads and a chod, I'm sure they follow this up and into the deep water.

The deeper water will be very cold. What does your lead feel like, freezing?

Without know the water 100% a few pointers from me.

Deep waters in my experience they will spend a lot of time up in the water, they ain't going to sit in 4 degrees! It will also take a long time to warm up!

Zigs would be worth a try, floaters as it warms up. You might get 10 or 20 fish off the top or 5 or 6 off the deeper spots if you get my drift, don't know the stocking

Still a bit cool but as it warms up I would fish the margins on a night or the shallow spots out in the lake in the day and night

Weed = carp, it will be crawling with pond life so I would definitely fish on it on near it

Simple thing, who is catching, are they catching regular, where from (shallows, weed, depths) and on what

Deeper lakes always add another challenge imho especially when legering baits, like a third dimension, they are either down there or not.

You can present a bait almost anywhere if you put your mind to it fella. Just keep your eyes peeled and fish for them where they like to be/feed.

If you're only doing short sessions then finding the fish to begin with is the key in my experience. Spend some time watching the water and maybe talking to other anglers helps , you mentioned you have a fish spy , try and use it to locate some feeding spots and keep a note of their location , i.e. distance and line of sight , this way you can generate an idea of where the fish may be on a given day .
I used to fish an old quarry very deep but with lovely areas of 8-12ft , at this time of year I was catching most fish in the shallower spots only on short day sessions , I'd already found the clear shallow spots from previous sessions and knew if it was suitable weather conditions they'd be on them spots , I would usually just fish chods over a scattering of ‘sticked' out baits , I found the chod rigs were pretty instant on that particular venue don't know why , but did very well on them for a quick bite , if there are severe drop offs then try and get a bait on the top of the drop off , hope this helps

Personally I don't have confidence with chod rigs that I haven't pulled them into the weed, even with slack lines, the weight of the mono as it takes on water can pull the whole shooting match into the green stuff.

Instead, if the weed isn't too thick (2 ft or less) I like to use a chod section fished like a hinge stiff but with a supple braid boom of 2 ft or so (depending on weed depth of course). Critically balance the chod section and use nuggets on the hook - the idea being once the nuggets have dissolved the hook section will gently settle on top of the weed.

To be honest if the weed is thicker than a couple of feet I don't like to fish in it and would prefer to try and find/create a clear area

Hi mate,

I used to fish a sand quarry that went down to 40ft+, so I know what your going through. I found that an adjustable zig to be brilliant, especially pre spawning. I used to have two rods on it, working up from the bottom a ft at a time just off the marginal shelf, with them leapfrogging each other in depth every hour or so, until I found the fish.

After spawning, I liked to find one or two weed free spots and put a bit of spod mix down, or use a spread of boilies and fish a chod over the top. Ideally a naked chod, to keep it proud of the weed. If you are worried about it being dragged into the weed, even when fished naked, just set the top bead higher.

Don't ignore half boilies, as they flutter down and sit really nicely on the weed.

Make sure you get some seriously buoyant pop ups, because fishing at depth really messes with your pop ups! Proper Job MB's are the mutts nuts!!
Are you sure?
