For me I went from a 5 series touring, to a Berlingo van and now to an XC90.
Each have advantages and disadvantages.

BMW 540i Touring XDrive
Advantage - comfort, performance, long load space
Disadvantage - shallow boot and tight on space if you have a lot of gear, especially a power porter, not really ideal for muddy tracks with low profile wheels/tyres and marginal off road capability with limited ground clearance.Expensive
Berlingo Van
Advantage - incredible space, can wheel a loaded power porter up a ramp(rods off), good to drive for a van, economical and no need to worry when it gets dirty. Cheap to buy
Disadvantage - its a van, van driving position and no 3/4 vision. Heavy condensation on the inside of the windscreen in the mornings. Its a manual gearbox.
Volvo XC90
Advantage - Comfort, huge load area, economical(depending on engine) good off road capability.
Disadvantage - Expensive
The Berlingo made the best fishing vehicle provided you can live with restricted rear/side vision and the more upright driving position.
The XC90 blows the BMW away for space and off road practicality

Can't compare a 540i to an xc90 though, a fairer comparison would be to an x5.

Thats very useful thank you. What I can gather from this thread seems the ideal route would be your preferred choice of car for daily/general driving and a van just for fishing due to the convenience of it. Unless money is no issue though compromises must be made one way or another

Well I can compare an X3 M40i to the XC90. as I changed it for the XC90, although I never used it for fishing as I had the van.
The X3 does not have quite as much space as the XC90, but its much better than the 540i touring as the roofline is higher, so you can get more stuff in. Performance is epic for a fishing vehicle, but the suspension is firm, so whilst it can go off road with ample road clearance, again the very low profile wheels/tyres limit its ability and the firm suspension will give you a work out over unmade roads and tracks.

For sure the best solution, money no object is a car for day to day and a small van for fishing.

Yeah the xc90 even has more room than the x5, my ultimate fishing wagon would be the new defender lwb but to expensive.
Did consider a land cruiser amazon 20+ years ago as I was towing a boat but ended up with a shogun lwb.

I'd go for the 20yr old Amazon - there would be no wars if it wasn't for Toyota lol

Single? I had a van and Porsche for weekends (I had a Cayman R). Married with kids now ... so it's a car (Estate). Can't get the kids in a van. Just got my new Audi RS4 Evant after a stupid long wait - it's the dog's nuts and has loads of room for the gear.

Difficult to suggest a car for someone without knowing their circumstances and thoughts on driving. A Ferrari ff would probably make decent fist of been a good fishing car, if you'd dare park it anywhere, as would a Berlingo
Pretty much every car I've owned, with a couple of exceptions, has been able to carry my gear, some more compromised than others. I've been driving a lwb Shogun for coming up 5 years, great for getting your gear in and traversing rough ground, not so much at the pumps though. On paper it's rubbish, but I quite like it, plenty of character, sadly lacking in most modern cars that just seem to want to isolate you from the road. I took my wifes Yeti up to the lake a couple of weeks ago, Whilst being a bit soulless, it felt like a sports car after driving the Shogun.

How about a crew van - 2 rows of seats plus plenty of space behind. Lots of lads using them and all the manufacturers do them
