I'd go for the beginning of the 90's, but hey, it's splitting hairs.

Carp fishing back in the 80's had something different about it and was in a way separate with its own language and ethos to general course fishing which obviously goes way back before then. I used to get sneered at by the match guys in school in the early 80's for my carp antics. Maybe it was something to do with being the only one of two people specifically fishing for carp at school excluding all else. We were different, we wore ex army kit, slept under low slung nu brollies...hunting down waters that had never been fished for before for large carp... trailblazing for others to follow in our footsteps in our own, insignificant way. We may not have been the best anglers or the first to do similar, not by a long chalk, but we were doing our own thing on our own terms and not following the heard.

And then... ...then came the noddy

I was honestly mortified when I heard about the early carp matches and competitions; which still rocks me to my core till this day. Times they certainly do change and nothing stands still eternally. Everything is in constant flux. Change is guaranteed, unending and inevitable. I suppose that a huge part of the reason that I find the whole match thing so alien is that I'm not that much of a competitive person when it comes to angling; I'm just trying to catch for me and not trying to impress anyone with what I catch in the slightest. I literally don't care.

I'd be foolish thinking my world view is the only world view, that aside, a swim is a swim and not a peg. Even Jesus said that...

Interesting what you say about the 80's. Around me it was all predominately match, i used to do a bit, i also used to carp fish but that was done with one rod whilst fishing for anything that swims on the other. Then progressing to two rods, and then 3

Match fishing its pegs and death at the draw bag

Carp fishing seems to be more "swim" orientated

Its not a spot, thats for sure, thats what the carp feed on. If you were to fish from a spot you would be sat out in the lake piss wet through

Agree on the carp match thing, deffo not my cup of tea, i have fished a couple for the experience but as a whole pressure and carp fishing do not go hand in hand for me, i go to relax, i can put myself under enough pressure finding the fish and getting on them or moving, i can have a nap then

Thats the one for me. Fish for your self, nobody else

Doesn't it depend if the lake is "pegged" with wooden stakes or similar to identify the swims numerically?

peg/plot/pitch/swim/ number/name?.....at the end of the day it looks like you're the only one actually concerned with what you deem to be the correct terminolgy for whats basically a SPACE in which to erect your shelter...or are you still 80's style hardcore and insist on slumming it just because you can?
