I had 2 guys come past on the canal 2 nights ago they were pissed luckily the older guy said you spoke to my step son and that was it friends for life all because his son was also baiting up but had gone away on holiday,he said if I have any hassle mention his name as he was known in area now I know he was drunk and so was the younger guy but people like that are no issue just taking dog for a walk and stumbled on some one fishing,I'd much rather fish where I am now than my town stretch where kids/adults gangs used it as a short cut the amount of hassle i had even though they are on opposite side was ridiculous but I was still careful,not just me either pleasure anglers fished my side because of the hassle they got especially if they were older.
The stretch I'm on is 30 minute walk with my gear(obviously stop and starting) but i don't see many people maybe dog walkers and joggers oh I did have 3 motorbikes(well scooters)come past with 2 on each bike balaclaved up and in black like the so called road men but had no problem just stay out their way no issues it's because the wether is now picking up a lot more traffic on towpaths nowadays as people want to walk and get fit.

I remember when I lived in Southampton and was fishing a tiny lake not far from home got my dogs with me(2 Staffies) one was very protective other was friendly,anyway couple of the locals(also drunks) who fished the place one of them took exception to me fishing never had issue with him before but he was with his wife he came over and tried to start I kept my cool as I'd got a lot of gear with me didn't want hassle just wanted to fish,anyway my dog came out of bivvy as usual if he didn't like you he'd let you know about it by tail down and a warning growl,the guy started to get lairy as he'd had some Stella's tried to kick my dog or my bivvy not sure which and my dog went for him,he stumbled away as his wife kept calling him and then a guy who I knew and got on really well came round and started on him asking why's he starting trouble when I hadn't done anything to kick it off and he walked off with his tail between his legs as his wife was going mad at him.

Very true, I think the key is to accustom yourself to the surroundings i.e when fishing on a local canal I would have a different people perception than say I would on the syndicate.
It is a scary world when some guys feel the need to be tooled up on the bankside just incase.

The spots I choose are normaly a good walk there tends to be hardly any people about if the weather is poor but more about when the weather takes a turn for the better ie:joggers,dog walkers,cyclists and people using the cut as a short cut to get to and from work also more lads out on motor bikes when weather is better as coppers can't see what they are upto,it's sometimes like a taxi service 2 to a scooter and up land down dressed like ninjas,but never had any problems even the odd couple of school kids taking a shortcut never an issue, but town centre stretch can be bad with gangs of young lads from all ethnic backgrounds taking short cuts from the manor hospital to town centre,I know where I'd feel safer to fish over night.

The theory is brilliant, but sadly not always possible.
On mine and Chanmenie's syndicate, that is in theory safe, no trespassing, a gated entrance, yet while walking Sky round the lake I have had to warn off Eastern European trespassers who climbed through the fence and hedgerow.
It doesn't take much for a safe area to become a dump, Chantry Park in Ipswich, even Alton Water used to be safe, but now it seems the dregs of society rule the roost.
It takes a lot of effort to get things back to decent.
On Alton even walking miles from the car park and hiding away isn't always enough. Drink, drugs and dogging in the car parks meant that they ended up being locked at night.

There is that possibility but as soon as one is twitching on the floor I doubt the others would be hanging around.
I've only tried it with two though of which they soon scarpered after they realised I wasn't messing about doing my Sunday best (was a Sunday night actually, lol) to take off one of their heads with a spade.
The difference is that when you're not afraid of getting a beating then that's when one can get the upper hand.
