Given that the Govt. has just approved the opening of a new coal mine despite promises at previous climate summits to "consign coal to history" , I feel we're going to see a lot more of them in the future.

I could have got this wrong but I thought I heard this coal will be used as an essential ingredient in steel making rather than power production.
We still import coal, surely it makes sense to mine our own rather than bring it over from countries like Australia, no need to make coal use worse than it is. Better to create UK jobs, was it 500 I heard?
Same with buying fracking gas from the USA. All that power needed to liquify it, ship it, de-liquify before we can use it. Burning gas may not the greenest form of power but let's not make that worse either.

There's pros and cons with it, I'd personally err on the side of it being the wrong thing to do. I'd be interested to see where they recruit the miners from. But regardless of what you or I think about it, from a climate change point of view, it's a backwards move, continues the trajectory of Britain looking idiotic on the world stage, and green activists everywhere are going to hate it.

Whether we agree with it or not we are working towards carbon neutral.
What's the chances that when we import fracked gas and coal we don't count the carbon footprint it leaves to get here as ours but it belongs to someone else. Very high I think.
