I have a Renault Trafic van with a second row of seats short wheel base so fits in a normal parking space. We have 3 kids, and a dog so just means space is never an issue. Can fit all our bikes in the back for a day out and rear seats fold down to make a bed so can be used as a basic camper (no kitchen etc).
That size van (same as transit) can go to a normal garage for MOT as below the weight threshold. It's old so MPG is ~33 so always a downside.
But I like that it has rubber floors so easy to sweep and mop out, plus robust interior so kids can't trash it easily.
For fishing can just wheel the barrow in with rods attached.
We have a Renault scenic also but both cars used daily.

Looked at a Sportage yesterday. The problem right now is buying a used car is a really bad time given the way the market has swung due to Covid shaking it up. They say it should normalise by May but we'll see.
Like the idea of a VW Passat estate as someone mentioned.
I think I'm leaning away from a van given the very valid points around using it to commute to work, family expeditions and more.

Prices are starting to drop back, but it won't really change massively until the supply of new cars gets back to normal - which could be a while yet!
Also, it depends what you mean by normal - lots of cars are 5/6k more than this time last year, its going to be a long time until that undoes itself. But then if you are trading something in, that will also be dropping as well.

Sportage probably a good shout for fishing/family compromise.
It's worth checking with any fishing vehicle that you can get bedchair, barrow and a few other bits and bobs in the boot without needing to put seats down. Personally I find it really useful to be able to have all my kit and still have 1/2 rear seats available for ferrying kids about either on the way to it from the lake. The x-trail isn't a big vehicle but the boot is decent and allows this.

Anybody tried a 7 seat Kodiaq ? Looks like a people carrier that with seats folded holds 2000 litres of gear.

I still drive a VW Golf.
I can 2 peoples gear in there for 2 days, obviously me driving, mate in the passenger seat and Sky in the back seat.
I don't know if a VW Golf Estate would suit you?

Yes Mate. She sits in the rear drivers side passenger seat.
With half the rear seat folded down I get tackle in the boot, along with 1 bedchair, and the other in the rear passenger footwear. The rod holdalls are loaded in the rear hatch and come through the middle.
My mate was surprised we could get everything in there as we normally used his van, but when it was written off we had to use my car.

Such a compromise all time. Trying to have a decent car not constantly covered in crap!
Im torn with same but im tight and fuel is costly so the big vans are no the option for me personally even though i'd love a VW T5 & Ford Custom & the like.
4x4 as i go over some rough tracks/farmers fields.
30 -40MPG in the big vans compared to 50-60 + for an estate /SUV ......
