Have a look at a Jeep Cherokee 2.8td four wheeldrive with high or low ratio
I had one years ago pulled my mate out of a few sticky spots in its time

Avoid anything german or German supplied as they are nothing but money pits and trouble unless your happy to pump money into it to just keep it running. Same goes for anything Land Rover.. there as bad as if not worse..
Honda CRV, Toyota rav 4 etc
Trust me, it'll save you a lot of money...

My last cars and what they have cost me (other that routine servicing, tyres etc.) have been as follows:
Audi rs4 - £0
BMW M340i - £0
BMW 340i - £0
BMW 335D - £0
It depends on what you want really but of you want a blend of practicality and performance, a toyota rav4 or a honda CRV arent going to cut it!
I do agree about landrover though. Literally everyone i know that has bought one, or a range rover has had some significant issues with it including both gearbox, diff and engine failures

My last 2 company cars have been from the VW group and I've had no issues with them whatsoever. Wouldn't hesitate to get a used older car from the VW group, or any other German manufacturer. Buy with confidence I say.

As below my last 3 cars have been faultless and apart from being serviced they have never let me down

My Misses's RAV is 5.8secs 0-60. Quick enough for an SUV, or for most people wanting a petrol auto AWD car that averages over 50pg.

I'm on my second Crv petrol...First one cost me £1,500,had it for nine years ,apart from new tyres,exhaust ...it never let me down ,until it started to leak and it was well over 22 yrs old by then ,...

In a minute, cars ,especially fossil fuel cars ...Will be total anathema,..sadly the electric push is ramping up,and Net zero brainwashing will determine whether you'll.even have the freedom to travel like you are doing now..
If I was looking at any car I'd be looking at cheap as possible ...I'd certainly not be phallus waving or bigging up how much a vehicle costs ..

Thanks to everyone for the suggestions. It's a bit of a nightmare! Thoughts have gone from an x trail, to a Dacia duster, but the CRV seems best value and decent cargo space. Will be keeping my eyes peeled.
CRV is a good choice. Compared to any German soft roader it's simply such a better choice for reliability, I've had one for years, the only reason why I've had 2 is that the first one got written off in a multi car pile up - I stopped but the cars behind me didn't.... A Hyundai tucked itself under the back of the CRV, I drove forward and pulled off it and drove the CRV home but the insurance wrote it off.
Our latest one has north of 160k on it now and it's just a reliable workhorse. The wife abuses it and has zero respect for cars..... it's a horse owner thing. We have a 2008 CDTI. Just service them on time and you have few issues.
One of the only other cars I'd consider is a Rav4.
Buy German... You buy trouble pretty much every time... Land Rover... Just don't bother...
