Just put a slice of bread on top of a closed NGT or Ridge monkey ,it'll toast spot on ,keep heat down ..
I have an open fire ,it's all we have during the storms ,Goretti ...we lost power ..Still cooked our t,on the open coals and wood from dead fall...note ...never buy a property without hearth ,or open fire ....I note all new lego box homes are fully electric ..
Big mistake ,as gubberment don't want you to be self reliant..( just saying )

I too am glad I have hearths. They're always been covered over in the 25 years I've been here but I'm hopeful I could get them back into service if needed. I think I'll scope it out next time im decorating. Good chance theres a gas shortage looming so return to coal or wood fire might be worth planning ahead for

Lots of areas have bans on wood fires. Best check before spending any money.

Makes me laugh. Clean electricity being used for EV's....the world is so much better off....hold on a minute....the Canadians are up in arms about logging to make biomass which is then transferred to the U.K to be burnt at Drax....open your eyes people
On the subject of log burners, if you want to use a existing chimney a installer will want to leak test it, if it fails it'll need to be lined. The cost for lining ours was near 1K so we went with a new external and blocked up the existing.
Also worth getting a multi fuel stove, I tries to convince the Mrs but she still wanted her Stuv 30...fgs

I had a multi fuel burner installed, my chimney failed the leak test and we just installed a "Liner", cost about £150. No need to line the chimney.
And where the chimney did fail, it was on the chimney itself where some of the cement was missing and alternatively the brickwork could have just been "pointed" to block the leaks, a quick simple fix

Nothing beats a open fire in winter for that lovely 'home feeling ',especially if you've sourced the wood seasoned it and stacked it ready ...you get a sense of achievement and surviving ,not being reliant on anyone but yrselves , .

I think we're talking the same thing but very different costs. When I said lined I meant with a stainless steel flexi tube liner. Our chimney failed on exterior mortar and internal cement, leaking into the bedroom.
We ended up paying the grand anyway as we had the chimney taken down to roof level, tiled over and the hearth making into a log store.
