Nah, I don't believe in learnt behaviour in any fish otherwise they wouldn't keep eating little round balls the same size and colours would they?
Why not, the vast majority aren't dangerous. Some fly fisheries introduced keep instead of catch and release because because fish learned and weren't getting caught.
It's only anglers who convince themselves carp (fish) have massive IQ's and are dead clever, I'm quite the opposite.
Humans in general think they know what other animals think or do, in most cases without any evidence to back up their thoughts, I like to try and keep a open mind and go of what I see/experience as anything else is conjecture (nowt wrong with that it opens discussion).

A long time ago Rod Hutchinson came up with the idea that if a carp could see the line then they wouldn't get spooked. It was only when they felt something they couldn't see.
As for colours in general i don't think it makes a lot of difference but did read that purple was a colour that they see the best.

If carp were so intelligent they would not repeatedly get caught on yellow pop ups with no nutritional value, or little round balls either.

carp intelligence is an interesting topic - lots of very confused thoughts & opinions that are based on them experiencing senses & thinking the same as we do.
of course we know that this isn't true but we still seem to think that way because it is a total head**** to not think like we do. there are some area's where they do though - very basic & primal thoughts & some very important ones too.
how they behave & act became a lot easier for me to understand when I discovered what drives all behaviors in all living creatures - the desire to be comfortable - and what that actually means in the simplest terms.

All things considered, seriously, who'd want to use a yellow line over a line that blends in better with natural surroundings.
Carp learn by association, it's not intelligence, it's natural instinct. If you put food down for your dog and everytime it goes to eat you kick it in the face it's gonna wait for you to walk away before eating. Same goes for carp with lines, until greed takes over.

Na. Do you have any they don't?. Also I'm sure there has been some studies with carp and auto feeders on farms. They learn that by mouthing the feeder it releases food. Not scientific I grant you.

Funnily enough JamieNow peaked my interest on the subject last night so I did a little reading up on learnt behaviour versus intelligence. There was one paper which said intelligence could be a learnt behaviour and not something your born with or governed by brain size (hence why humans use so little of it), and given the arguments they cited its hard to disagree. If that is the case Carp do show levels of intelligence, imo.
And re, why do Carp keep getting caught on boilies, what are they meant to do, stop investigating food sources with one of the only method they have, their mouths?
Still, interesting that some Carp go years without capture even though they used to get caught on boilies and trip up on the odd one every now and again.

Good point. Again might be a greed thing. We all know how those bright ones launched around in spring start to become less effective come the warmer months. Some would argue it's cos their senses are dulled coming out the winter so that's why they work. It's all opinions.

That's just because they don't like the taste/signals or maybe they're wired differently to the crowd?
I see it like putting a massive steak Infront of a vegan unless they're really really hungry they'll wait until they find some grass or vegan dust to eat.
The missing mirror used to go years without being caught and we all just accepted it preferred a diet of naturals rather than some nasty thing that looks and smells different.

Ultimately, they're fat lazy dumb silt pigs so if they aren't mooching around and little balls keep dropping on / around them why wouldn't they keep eating them?
Like being at an all you can eat buffet 😂😂
