Honda CRV . Lots of load space, decent on diesel (in 1.6), drives nice, very reliable. Had same dilemma.. Always tough choice and always compromise.

Another vote for a Honda CRV.
I usually swap cars after 3 years but kept my previous CRV for 6 years as nothing goes wrong with them.
I now have a 2014 plate coming up for 3 years and again have no plans to change.
For the size I think it has the biggest capacity boot. I have the 1.6 diesel and average nearly 50mpg.

I know its not what you asked for but as vans are mentioned why not another Berlingo or Teepee. My wife changed job last Aug to one with no company car so had been driving our 2006 Berlingo to work. Its still quite tidy but doesn't really meet with the appearance req for her job so over the last few months we looked for a new car.
She wanted a little number but she/we got a Peugeot Rifter and she loves it, it's on the same chassis as the Berlingo/Combo and another I forget, anyway I digress.
While looking round there were some really good pre face lift models ( I was looking Berlingo) with ultra low miles within your budget and top spec too....well worth considering imo.

REnault grand modus, brilliant space and you can keep your hat on, or citroen c3 picasso, le space box. Well within budget, both with reliable diesel engines, or maybe even ulez (pfff) compliant gasoil engines. I once had a small modus, and besides looking like a total weirdo, amazing space. Can't remember if you could remove the rear chairs, in which case the scenic comes to mind.

I used to have a Peugeot 3008, i really liked that as a car perfect for fishing.
They've got a split rear tailgate and a multi level boot so you can keep stuff in the lower section and still have useable space above when not fishing.
The rear seats fold completely flat, and there is loads of room in it height wise.

Well, I may get some dirty looks in the car park, but my new Audi RS4 Evant ticks all the boxes for me as my fishing wagon. I waited 18 months to get it as well. £79,000 well spent
