The sonar returns are much thinner from smaller fish. It's really obvious on somewhere like the Trent which is full of Dace, Roach, Chub etc. Bigger fish show as much thicker arches or lines (length doesn't give any indication of size, it's just how long the fish was in the cone).

Interpreting a return is an art that's for sure.

Anybody who has a deeper or echo sounder read everything you can about how they work . Choose your frequecy carefully and you will slowly learn how to get the best from them.

I wouldn't want to be casting that thing out all over the place and looking for fish to be honest. A few casts to check the depth and weed and I swap it for a lead to get the drop I'm after. The thing goes in like a cannonball and I'm not that into staring at a screen while fishing.
