It doesn't say that he wants to fish at 100 yards with 9 foot rods. It says he mostly uses 9ft rods, but also uses 12ft rods for a few sessions a year where he needs to fish at longer range. He would like a reel to do both.
My recommendation for the above would be to try and find a set of the original Castizm. I personally wouldn't bother with the BR version.
I would also be happy using a set of 5000t tournaments on both 9 and 12 foot rods, but that will get the ‘balance' brigade all frothy

Agreed. I have SS2600's with WD speed caps, and Emblem 45's. I bought 3 Inception 6000's for £130 and IMO in the limited use I've had so far they're better than both the above. Already QD but not a 1/4 turn QD so a bit more progressive, lovely positive bail arm click (first thing I noticed when using them), good retrieve, line lay and nice and smooth.
Assuming they don't fall apart, they're immense value for money.

I was thinking more of something that would suit the scope rods he has, can't really be talking big distances or 9ft rods wouldn't be the choice,no?

All good advice, cheers folks. Often fish around 100 yards with the scopes, as that's simply the range to get tight to the islands at the closest water to me. Not always fishing that range but that's often where the fish are. Lugging 12ft rods on public transport is such a nightmare it used to put me off going - I go fishing way more often with 9fts than I used to with 12fts, so well well worth it.
Obvs a 9ft rod isn't ideal for it, so a big part of the aim of the new reel is to make life easier to get there consistently.
If the advice is that I'll probably cast further with a smaller size reel like the Shimano ci4+ 5500 or the Daiwa Whisker 25QD then that's great advice and I'll go that way. Mostly they seem to get talked about for fishing at 30-80 yards tho, so if anyone has hands-on experience with either at those distances then that would be great to hear. Don't have the option to borrow and trial any.
If the advice from the Terry Edmonds video (working my way through them but not found the one yet) is that a 14000 will make life 5-10% easier than a 5500 then that probs does make a useful practical difference to me (for much the same cost). Need new reels anyway so why not get the ones that will help the most?

When I was testing a new range for a custom rod builder . I was measuring 147 yards with 12lb line braided shock leader and a 3oz lead on a semi fast 2.75 blank and original 5500 ultegra xtb's . So I don't see why you couldn't get 100 yards with 5500's and the rods you want to use. As long as your technique is good

If you are using the scopes for the bulk of your fishing then get the size reel that suits them best, which would be something smaller like 5500 size. 14000 size reels on little 9 footers won't be great to use and won't gain you distance ,and could possibly cost you some.

That is everything what you need. Last one I have since 2015 with 50 days on water per year and one reglular service(maintance) without any problem to this day. Very good reel for margin work and medium distance.
I don't know how good is last edition (currently on the Market) of that reel

Here you go, that Terry video...3m difference between the 5500 and 14000 with 10lb line. Like he says, bit different with heavier lines due to the dip in the smaller reel being larger so shouldn't cast as far. Either way, goes to show what the 5500 is capable of given the right technique 👍

Definitely agree with you. Little reels for little rods. I use the 2600's on my 9ft rods, would be swamped with a 1400 size reel. A mate of mine uses his 5000T reels on his 10ft rods; they cope with it very well and don't seem like the reels are too big for the rods.
Looking back, I really should have got 5500 for my 9ft rods as the 2600's coil up fluorocarbon really badly, plus the 5500 have better retrieval and are generally a better reel.

Thanks TeeCee - really interesting that. Use 12lb/0.33 daiwa sensor mainline for most of my fishing except at one venue in my area that specifies minimum of 15lb/0.35 line, which is the point he says he'd go to a 14000 reel. Not one I fish often though and think there only are about two swims there where about 130yards is even possible but all the rest are under 100, so spool size probably not a factor for me if I stick to my lighter lines. Would be interesting to see the impact 0.35+ line would have on his casting with a 5500, but seems for me like there's not much advantage to the 14000 spool.
Probably leaves me looking at the Shimano ci4+ 5500 and the Daiwa Whisker 25QD. Have seen a few people seem to like the ci4+ ultegras, but does anyone have hands on experience with the smaller Daiwas? The Daiwa seems 50% more expensive but has pretty much identical features to the ci4 shimano from what I can tell.
Are there any particular advantages to going for either brand?
I can also see that at that size the regular Ultegra XTD 5500 would also weigh less than my current reels while being half the price of the ci4s. Besides the ci4s being an extra 60g lighter per reel, is there much to separate them otherwise?

I've had a waggle with the Daiwas Whiskers just out of interest but have never used / cast them . . .they are very light and compact but the 25 spool can def chuck the distance easy . . .match anglers are casting up to 100 with Castizm feeder reels with braid and heavy feeder rods and these are the same spool size . . .
For what its worth look at this vid - Cast 30 wraps like a boss
Darrell Peck using Castizm BR25's on his marker rod. . .IMO save the dosh and get the Emblem BR25As instead . . .same real body, same spool size, similar tech, lighter and half the price . . .
