I see what you're saying but struggling to get my head round it.
We clip up when the rod tip reaches the required number of wraps (that's where I'm getting my datum rightly or wrongly). So the measurement of X # of wraps plus the distance to the clip is different on a 6 ft rod than a 15 ft rod no?

You're right mate as you don't wrap the actual rod around the sticks ,so the distance wrapped is from tip to lead not clip to lead

The length of the rod being used to cast is utterly irrelevant. If one hundred or one million anglers all using different gear put 25 12ft wraps on the reel and clip up and then cast and hit the clip properly to get the lead down on a tight line they will all cast 100yds plus one rod length measured from where they are standing to the lead. No more. Work it out yourself.

But hitting the clip with the rod vertical like most do ,the length of the blank will make a difference. Not a lot,but a difference for sure.the wrapped distance is of course the same

Exactly. The wrapped distance remains the same. Controlling the variables is the skill in achieving real accuracy.

Yes, so by adding or subtracting from the clipped distance is how that is achievable. Although sometimes I think being mega accurate with spods etc can work against you

I think the length of the rod does make a difference however slight it may be, the total clipped distance as someone has mentioned is to the clip on the reel, so with a longer rod you will still have the same amount of line from rod tip wrapped around sticks as you would with a shorter rod but with a longer rod (depending on reel seat position) more line could be out.
If the standing position of the cast was the same position a longer rod would cast slightly further in most cases it would be irrelevant but on the example below comparing a 6ft rod to a 15ft rod, if the 6ft rod was clipped to cast tight to a treeline then the same number of wraps on the longer rod could well hit the tree line unless standing position of cast was changed

The OP is asking 10 vs 11 (which imo is genuinely irrelevant) but same principle.
Edit: I dont think there is a "normal" method of feeling the lead down guys. I keep my rod high, my pal let's it hit low and follows it down. But I agree that taking all this into account is what makes you accurate.

Edit: I dont think there is a "normal" method of feeling the lead down guys. I keep my rod high, my pal let's it hit low and follows it down. But I agree that taking all this into account is what makes you accurate.
It's pointless arguing over a couple of feet difference from the length of the rod, because the line stretch will vary from cast to cast, as will the bend in the rod. I defy anyone to cast accurately repeatedly down to 1ft.

No one arguing mate. I'm chuckling at myself for not getting head round it.
But I agree with stretch etc that it's not possible to get it on a bin lid. That said, isn't that all the more reason to consider this stuff?

I have 12'6 rods and 12ft Spod and this did have me thinking a lot more then i should of, to get my head around it.
Concluded that when i wrapped up my rods i would be 6" past my marker spot - I tell myself this is ok as a buffer for line stretch and bouncing on the clip a touch etc. As long as i feel it down the same I'm happy.

Youd love fishing me for a season , i use a 10 foot marker rod and a 12 foot marker and 12,6 inch casting rods most of the time. I sometimes write stuff down , most of the time not. I do ponder these things sometimes but i generally fish a vicinity i like to call it rather than than a tight spot. Amazingly i catch my fair share . Ive been fishing the same lake for a few years now so i can remember areas in swims or even look in my vague scribbles but the weed growth means that clear spots change an awful lot unless they are baited permanently. So for me to be confident i need to have a little lead about every time....
