For the money, I don't think you can beat the army gear, cheap as chips and if you mangle any of it, they're cheap to replace👌
Coincidentally, the new MTP army waterproofs come in a bib and brace version. Never fancied the German stuff to be honest.

I'm not defending it as the price is high and you could get halkon hunt made to measure gore-tex for that money which is very good stuff.

I've got Arcteryx Goretex Pro trousers . . .but I use them for skiing, not fishing. Goretex Pro is a brilliant in terms of protection vs weight vs breathability etc, albeit it is 'noisy' and crinkly / stiff until worn in for a bit. Would argue that its also OTT for fishing, and like all breathable membrane kit will soon wet out when covered in goo / slime / oils / boilie crumb etc.
Must admit however that Norrona Recon kit has given me a mild boner . . .

Agree with Belch, Fabsil is the stuff you want. Probably find the standard stuff is all you need plus this has the UV protection, Gold is a more concentrated formula for more extreme conditions but doesn't have the UV protection. If your bivvy is made from a breathable material then go Gold as well.

Used Grainger's and the Nikwax stuff which I believe is PTFE based (wood glue based) and found them both to be pretty poor, after a while the water soaks in
Fabsil stuff is more repellent, beads off and lasts much longer though not as breathable
Final frontier for man, a truly waterproof coat. It's out there, it's what trawler men wear, solid PVC and multi layers, trouble is, do anything over activ and you are soaked with perspiration from the inside
Gortex, Pro shell, Event, one of the most breathable, I have had most over the years, once the original repellent wears off they all need re-treating and this effects their breath ability when doing active things, personally I don't think there is an ideal treatment because they all have their pros and cons. The idea of gortex is that the membrane keeps out the water, the shell of the material still gets soaked if it is not treated, block the breathability and the moisture stays within!
A tip from me with Gortex etc. If your jacket shell is getting soaked it s not really a problem, the membrane is the protection. You can spray it to prevent this but you will block the breathability. If you are getting water inside your Gortex you have either emitted too much perspiration because the breathability has been blocked (fabsil) or the Gortex is knackered and it's time for the bin or you are far too active and working beyond the material breathability capability

with Goretex 'regular' washing / tumble drying is the trick. Unfortunately nothing will compete with the original factory DWR coating applied (in terms of water repellency) so most tend not to wash as the fear of depleting this further on an expensive item worries them . . .however removing sweat dirt and general sh*te retains the membranes effectiveness which means the product will actually last longer. This is why (perhaps for fishing at any rate where we generally get covered in sh*te during wet muddy conditions) Goretex can be counterproductive . . .how many times a season do people wash their kit . . ?

Yeah proshell is a bit heavy for fishing. Goretex relies on you working hard and getting hot as you need to build pressure inside the jacket for it to breath. Event fabric relies on the temp and pressure on the outside of the jacket to literally pull the moisture through the jacket.. not exactly the right thing for angling.
Like most have said the best outer wear for angling is probably the army issue stuff. You don't need a £600 hardshell for sitting around the lake, those are for heavy mountain use and to be fair look a little silly on someone sat round a lake but each to their own.

I would say that is a pretty good summary Belch
Sat around in the rain, non active you won't go far wrong with PVC, for me unless you are fishing extremely light anybody who sits out in the rain with the amount of decent shelters around these days is a fool
I go for the army Gortex, cheap as chips and virtually disposable, good coat of fabsil on the shell and it's as good at it gets for me, Chuck it on when I get a fish, do the business, take it off, give it a shake, back under the shelter, job done, as a PVC jacket would, just wouldn't look cool in Fluoro yellow
