I like the rear reclining seats, it means the dog can have the boot, my rods/bivvy go in the front passenger footwell and the rest goes on the back seats. With seats 6&7 removed the underfloor storage is really usefull, my barrow handles, waterproofs and loads of other stuff live in there.

The Yeti is quite capable off road but the ground clearance is not that high if you're driving rutted tracks. You will struggle to find good off road tyres if you stick to the standard size, 225/50x17, I put Nokian all seasons on ours, they seem to do a decent job.

I've been looking at these they look all good. The 3.5 by looks tasty. Some have full leathers too

They have a taste for petrol, about 15mpg. Thought my diesel was bad enough at 26-30mpg.

Indeed you can, I have a power porter and just bought some wood panels as a ramp, all works fine. You will never get stuck with a Shogun!

I think it is a 3.1 turbo diesel. It is 16 years old and runs superbly. I have had loads of vans and estate cars over the years and this is by far the best. You just need to put yourself at ease in relation to running costs,over here in France there is no road tax to consider so it's just fuel but they aren't too bad all things considered. They go anywhere, the drive selection is awesome.

I had a 2005 legacy for 5 years over in New Zealand, outstanding car. Id gladly have another but they are pricey over here and I'm not sure on spare parts.
The only issue I ever had during that time was it was a bit thirsty and we had the smallest engine 2.0 boxer. But I'd done many river crossings, up to ski fields in ice and snow and driven 50k miles in my time there and it was still like the day we bought it.

. . .that's interesting Gerry - they won loads of awards for reliability etc? Anything to look out for . .? Just like the idea of a compact 4x4 (not a freelander) for rivers and one that can still carry all my carp gear . . .

Hey Ged - more clearance than my 330 msport touring though . . !
Any advice on which model to go for engine wise? You can pick these up now from 3-4k . . .

Ha, know what you mean with the BMW, I've got a car with 70mm under the sump, have to be careful over cats eyes on dips. As for the Yeti I would say one of the TDI's, either 140 or 170 bhp. My wife's is the 170 with a DSG gear box. The DSG gear box oil and the 4WD system oil needs changing every 40000 miles but a friends manual needed a new clutch and DMF at 80000 so probably not much in it. I think the manual is slightly more economical. Can't really comment how much kit you can get in, I've never used her's for fishing.
