My point exactly, and first time you buy one you get free water

Camping shops sell the opaque white ones for a couple of quid. A bit of spray paint or camo duct tape & jobs a good one if you don't want to carry a white non-carpy bottle. They fit in the side wheel panniers of Nash, Fox, etc barrows as well without any issues. Carp Porter supply them with their water bottle panniers as well. I have probably twenty or so different water containers that accumulated over the years in my shed yet only use the same one (an old Atomic carrier) as its already out & maybe have a 10l Ridgemonkey one left in the car with spare water should I be fishing a venue that has no fresh water facility (thankfully the main syndicate I fish has a drinking water tap connected directly to the mains supply behind one of the swims).

I've got a 10 it one of those which my dad used to take camping so many years ago I can't remember how old it is. Still as good as new and used regularly.

The problem with these Carpy containers is if not stored dry get a torch and look inside at the green algae as after time they all get it .
Clean mine with baby sterilising tablets when going green inside .

Might explain why when you have had a cup of tea at your mates swim you end up with the trots .

Basic hygiene. My dad taught me to sterilize everything after use , and before taking it out again. Common sense, unfortunately not everyone has any of that.

Don't do it every time but probably once a month or if they've not been used in a while I fill em with water and drop a few Milton tablets in and leave overnight. Then empty and flush a couple of times and it's as clean as a baby's bottle.

I've still got a couple of the original tracker 5L jobbies. We throw away a couple of 5L white water bottles each month. We buy the distilled water from Halfords for the iron. They're only about £3 ....can't see why you couldn't use them ....unless it has to be green.

Avoid carpy colours and go for clear or white containers then you'll get a better idea if it's getting dirty.
Not that exposure to a few germs is bad for you, it builds up the immune system, if you overly worried about such things maybe it's best you don't go fishing and take up a more hygienic hobby

I think it was Dave Lane who got a case of food poisoning after drinking water (tea) that had algae growing in it from someones water bottle.

I clean my containers between each trip, at the very least a shake round with hot soapy water, rinse and dry properly, sometimes a wash and soak with bicarbonate of soda, then rinse and dry.

...after using standard Caledonian mineral water bottles for years I had a moment of madness and bought the small ridgemonkey 5l as it was on a deal....the shape works well on the barrow however the tap mechanism on mine (primary reason for buying it) is poor and dribbles out making it a mild pain in reality...

When I got the Fox barrow I purchased 2 black food grade bottles with taps that were the perfect fit

but they are a bit of a faff as the tap although fast is stiff so you need to hold the bottle to turn the tap on and off and then there is the kettle to hold not enough hands
so dont use them any more Sainsburys water 5 litre of lovely drinking water £1.10 with free bottle
