Diawa powermesh rods 2 were 2 1/4 one was 2 3/4 test for long range, probably about 60 yards

I was fishing alongside a chap during the winter under our tarps with the Argos
Bed chair hanging out , like you do

Also the bigger boys showed me a proper carp rig

I had Shakespear Alpha Carp rods, then got glass Brush Ashby's for Xmas. Used Mitchel 410's and Bamford conversions when I was 15. Used to mainly fish with particles, chick peas or pintos. Rigs were dacron and hilton hooks and my shelter was a nubrolli, set up very low to the ground. Like everyone else, I used a bedchair from argos - although I do remember having a bedchair cover and it was brown?!
As time moved on and I started doing some part time work when at sixth form, I got KM1's, Cardinal 55's and Delkim conversions - you know, the ones with the rubber cover in the middle of the speaker. By then I also had custom stainless from tackle up, bars, stabilisers and needle bars... bait? I was making my own from ingredients. Geoff Kemp mainly. Made popups by moulding around poly balls... finally we had Fox bedchairs, bivvies and ready mades like Craftt Catcher and richworth - frowned upon as noddy fodder when I was a lad, I never used them... I'd also got a car by now, first one was an XR2, God it was awful for getting the gear into it and then I had a white Escort RS Turbo, the girls loved that...
Then it was a move to fishing bigger waters and I got Gibbinson Elcipses and Shimano Biomasters - those rods are now owned (and used) by a pal of mine. The first proper Delkim arrived and the cardinals long gone for 3500B and then the 8010 bait runners... at this point I still rolled my own bait, all of it, pop ups and all... I'd also got a Escort RS Cosworth by then, continuing the theme of inappropriate fishing wagons...
Then I went to Free Spirit rods, various Shimano big pits, continued using their baitrunners and then moved to Basias and Castizms in more recent times. All my rods are now Hi S or S series rods. Only in the last ten years have I stopped rolling my own bait and actually buy it rolled. I still however make my own pop ups, although the poly ball has long since gone. LOL.
People now really don't know how lucky they are. Info is easy to get, you can learn almost everything by watching on line content, forums like this where you can get help and ideas, bait is better than ever, tackle the same. The biggest one of all, the fish. Ten 20's in a season when I first started would have you in Angler's Mail and anyone who'd had a 30 plus was very special. Nowadays... on the right waters, I have caught more than that in just a day.
I actually prefer it all back in the day. Carp anglers were not the only people on the lake back then and the noddies were the guys sitting on seat boxes, watching a float. Now, the noddies usually need two barrow loads to do a day session and they're all after carp. It's a funny old game... I wonder how things will look in another 20 years?

My first matching pair of rods were Shakespeare cypry 2.5 lb cost me over £100 each as they were the top of the range carp rod Shakespeare did.I got the third about 5 or 6 years later along with the third bait runner 6010 and fox sx alarm
I gave my mate the rods for his son still in awesome nick when I gave him them and he still hasn't used them
Good old Bennett's of Sheffield
I then bought a set of 3 penn progression 1.75 tc rods and then sonik S4 when they came out so gave the penns to my brother in law who still used one of them until recently as a floater rod

Good old BOS, my abiding memory, everything of any value behind glass 🤣....still it made for a good ride out from Manchester. My last purchase from them was a top of the range (at the time) Fox Vario feeder rod just about the time I stopped err...feeder fishing! Still have it too, still has the shrink on the cork

First proper set of carp rods were clooper blanks from going brothers in southend, i built them myself using mums sewing cotton and humbrol model varnish...... Absolutely hideous things by the time I'd finished but my first set of nice rods were 11ft 2.25 north western rodcraft carbons with the rough tape rubber handles, solid front flares and 7 million rings, my mate roy is still using them 30 odd years later

My old stainless KJB Rod pod going strong , maybe 29 years old now , but still as good as new , story behind this pod, only a few made due to court action lol

Wondering what other people's first set ups an memories are from 'back in the day'
Going back 30 years ago now & my first actual dedicated carp setup was a straight swap with a friend of mine of my high end match gear for his old carp tackle that he no longer used after sticking to match fishing.
3 x TriCast 12' 2.75 ER rods
3 x Shimano Triton Sea Spin 3500
3 x Delkim converted Optonics
50" NuBrolli with a Nash Canvas Overwrap
Original Fox KM 2 leg bedchair
Gardner Rod Pod (the old square tube version with the solid 8mm stainless pins for legs)
I quickly added to that setup with an original Solar BowLoc landing net (which I still own with the original mesh still fitted!"), Solar Sod Pod with Satellite monkey climber bar & needles (which I later upgraded to the Super SOd Pod a couple of years later & still got the Super Sod Pod but for some reason cannot find the Satellite system which I know I never sold!) & a year or so later, upgraded the reels to Shimano BaitRunner Aero GT 8000's. I also remember my mother going mental when I told her I needed some new indicators as well to go alongside the Satellite monkeys in which I had her buy me the complete Solar hanger kit (everything that was available at release!) as she was expecting to spend £25 instead of the £120+ (from memory going back all those years!) that the lot came to. The Brolly & Overwrap setup was also replaced by a Rod Hutchinson Apotheosis 2 man dome. I did change over the rods a couple of year slater to 13' Daiwa Whisker Kevlar 2.5lb & also had the first vibration Delkim alarms as well.
My mother didn't mind buying me the gear back then as it got me out of the house so she could have an affair whilst my father was out watching Peterborough United play (home & away)! Oh how I milked that when I discovered her illicit secret!!!!!
