Never a truer word spoken.

You can never compete against anglers that are basically living at the lake with all the time in the world. Then you have the celebrity anglers that apparently only fish weekends lol..."got down early on a Thursday morning and left the following Monday"....using up my holiday time. How much fecking holiday time do you have to do this every week of the year...Weekend anglers, "righto then".

My advice to the original poster would be to do the reverse of the master baiters, fish small traps and keep mobile, and as someone as mentioned - fish where you see them, angling etiquette on the majority of waters is long gone. Do you own thing mate.

Be lucky.

I've always considered prebaiting whilst others are fishing as extremely poor etiquette. On a really big water and keeping way away from others wouldn't bother me too much. I also hate how people think that baiting a swim somehow claims it as theirs.

It all depends on the size of water and the number of members allowed to fish the water, the waters I fish all have more swims than membership numbers, so no issues at all.

I'm Angler A, I try to bait up 4 obscure, evenly spaced spots at least 3 times a week – not silly amounts just a constant trickle of Pellet/Corn/Boilie . Regardless of wind direction or who's in what swim I can guarantee I'll be able fish a swim I've pre-baited.

If someone is on I always ask if it's ok to pre-bait at least a couple of spots if it does not encroach on where they are fishing.

No issue with Angler B, a presence on the bank is essential these days even on a totally private Otter Fenced water. He has the advantage of being able to observer and act on what's he's seeing, gradually build up a swim or even move numerous times.

It's Angler C that's becoming a problem and the bans are following. He turns up once every blue moon, never comes near the water to learn anything, never bothers to pre-bait. Just turns up casts about a Deeper or sends a bait boat with an echo sounder on all over the lake until he finds fish, then sets up in the relative swim.
9 times out of 10 is where somebody else has been pre-baiting – I believe a certain Mr D Fairbrass has been on the receiving end of this, and has banned Deepers and Bait Boats on all his waters.

Me too, if someone is prebaiting and doing it discreetly and I know about it I will stay clear of the area, turn up and drop a sweet shop anywhere near me whilst I'm fishing and you'll get no respect from me.

If angler a has a head on his shoulders he'll do it out of sight of angler b. It isn't hard really I've done it the last 5 years since times become a lot more scarce. Unfavourable areas, swims that restrict amount of rods that'll be used, plenty of things to bear in mind when picking an area to do, obviously it'll have to be a place the fish pass or visit. 3 days before you fish too is always a good bet, or little and often.

On the etiquette front, I don't think that because you have a job and someone else is a dosser should bear any effect on whether to do something or not. I'm a one night a week angler, Friday nights, know the frustrations of getting to the lake last and spending 3 times less time on the bank as most, but it's a lifestyle choice, any of us could make the decision to be a dosser and go fishing, if someone's sacrificed enough in there life to do so it doesn't mean a bloke with a job and a family can barge in and do what he pleases just because his lifestyle doesn't suit being able to do a lot of time on the bank. I will bait my area as long as it doesn't effect anyone else who's fishing, be it full time or not. Generally when you earn a bit of respect around the lake through having etiquette of your own, it can often pay off for you in the long run and people will leave you alone.

Full timers, especially good anglers, often have a lot of respect for those with a family and other responsibilities with limited time on there hands, they arnt always the enemy people make them out to be.

I get the impression that you don't bait up to any degree, maybe I'm wrong.

Not saying that I or anyone else has any claim to any swim that I or they have pre baited through p issing rain, storms, boiling evenings getting eaten alive by mosquitoes and have pumped in £500+ over a period of time and the evening you turn up and everything is a go, some one is in your swim for the weekend. Disheartening doesn't even come close, especially so when you can't get back in there as some angler or his mates are hauling from your hard work.

I think some anglers (especially in the press) dress etiquette up sometimes, when what they are really doing is suggesting people don't do stuff that interferes with their own personal fishing situation regardless of it's polite or not. I just try to get on with everyone on the lake (often not possible but I still try) and then you can all pretty much do as you like (within reason) and usually have a laugh about it and catch a few.

Get to know the retired angler well enough, and get on with them, make them the odd bacon butty and brew and they might even do the baiting for you and keep an eye on your spots.

Your not saying it? but you pretty much have.

Scenario is if we were fishing the same lake and I knew you were doing this I would give you the respect to carry on, if I never knew you were up to this and turning up at obscure times keeping under the radar being stealthy when baiting up then don't be upset if you turn up and I'm sat in that swim as I have seen fish all over it, that's what everyone always bangs on about find them and fish for them.

Dependent on water size if I can I will give anyone their space to go about things so long as they do with me but if it's lets say a 10 acre water with a 25 man syndicate or a 50 club membership then it's not going to happen in reality, the only way to get around this is purchase your own lake and don't let anyone fish it.

Choose your venue carefully if you want to pre-bait in any quanitity.

It needs to be quiet both when you bait and when you fish!

Always much more to these type of situations. Size of lake, stock of fish [ not just carp ], areas fish favor, trends, amounts being baited, how it's baited, where & times and plenty more.

Like others I have always thought it bad manners to bait big while others are in the vicinity.
I've fished places where we left each other to it and where the moment your backs turned someones in there.

I accept that if ever I'm pre-baiting there is the chance that other anglers will go in there.

Angler A should have a chat with Angler B and say how he doesn't want to encroach on his fishing as he only has 1 night a fortnight but wants to maximize his chances so will be putting in a handful here and there, is that ok?

If it's not A has been polite and should just crack on with his fishing, two fingers to B.

I think we're singing from the same hymn sheet.

I'm very blatant about what I'm doing..I don't turn up at weird times like 2am in the morning and get the hump with someone hauling where I've been fishing. I'll try and attempt to use better language in respect to what I was saying in regards to the quote you've taken. I'd rather someone not fish where I've been blatantly baiting up, but if they do, just like me, they've got a ticket and can fish where they like.

And to ask again, do you do any baiting up and I don't mean a few kilos here and there either, I mean spending a fair chunk of your money chucking it in a lake, gravel pit etc sometimes for months on end? By the way I fish the weekends only and work hard during the week, so I'm not a water gypsy.

Disheartening doesn't even come close, especially so when you can't get back in there as some angler or his mates are hauling from your hard work.

Had that done to me many times

Years ago I used to send pictures to the angling times. Stopped doing it for that reason, people just look at the areas and punish them to death. Quite a few years later I learned my lesson again on the internet, a forum. Had a bit of a result for a certain area, couldn't get near the swims for the next year. One bloke, mediocre angler sat in it, punished it to death and caught most of the fish

Photograph them in other swims is tip. The trouble is now, i see carp fishing in a completely different light to what it used to be, gone are the days when somebody had a result and people respected and appreciated it. Everybody wants a piece of the action at any cost, I guess that's the word circus to a tee. because that's what it turns out to be!!!

When you pay to fish a lake you can fish wherever you like, you have paid. End of story.

What you need to do is keep everything to yourself. or share and share alike with like minded people, information goes both ways. You will be surprised how many shallow and desperate people there are out there

It's just savage isn't it?

I fish a large low stocked water that only a handful of members actually fish it regularly, half of which I don't tell anything to simply because they're not ones to share anything with as nothing has ever been forthcoming even when sharing gems with them. There's say 4 anglers that I share anything with as they're decent guys who are willing to share, one of which I've been helping a fair bit as he's been struggling quite badly.

I don't post anything on social media, I'm just doing my thing and enjoying it for just the love of being out in lovely surroundings and hopefully catching a whoppa from time.to time. Ha, I've had blokes ask me where I fish at work as there's a few carp anglers where I am, I tell them "need to know basis and you definitely don't need to know", "yeah, James bond s hit, double triple top secret."

Edited

Although some of that might sound contradictory, I might be blatant in my baiting up, I just don't let on what I'm having if anything.

You couldn't be more wrong. My fishing is based around prebaiting spots and areas, or just to establish a bait. I never get annoyed by another angler fishing over 'my spots'.
One of Cyprymikes mates once had a seven fish hit over a small area I'd been priming for months, I didn't even mention it to him when congratulating him on his result.

I think its all part an parcel of carp fishing nowadays.

generally everywhere is getting busier so having a ''spot'' that is never touched or baited unless by yourself is nearly impossible.
Are you sure?

This action cannot be undone.
