Looking to buy a new spod reel. Looking at ultegra xtd/xte or original emblem spod, any thoughts on those or any others you would recommend ? Cheers

Original Emblem Spod, much better built than the Shimano ones. If I had to choose an alternative it'd be the Daiwa Super Spod.

Have to agree... i have shimano reels and was gifted a Daiwa emblem, must say its a lot better then the shimano spod reel I had. The only thing i would (and will) change its the drag cap. Western Development do one which makes it a quarter turn from free spool to locked.

Got two of the Daiwa spod reels and they have never let me down .

The daiwa emblem spod reel is a horrible thing to use, I'd go for Shimano much nicer to use.

They are smoother for a short period of time but the internals go bang far far to easily to be used as a Spod reel, I've personally had 2 go wrong, one of the Black ones and one of the 3500 Competition versions, the only “Competition” was how quickly it would blow up!

As an alternative maybe a Penn Affinity 8000 spomb reel. Really good to use. Might be a bit heavier than the Shimano or Daiwa (I had an Emblem and definitely prefer the Penn).

Daiwa Crosscast Spod Reel is decent for the money.

Nothing wrong with the XTE Spods. I've got two of them, and both have been reliable workhorses.

Okuma Obsidian Spod out this year (not sure of exact date). Have three Obsidian Reels for fishing and they are spot on

I have one of each, and the daiwa is a far better reel than the Shimano imo. Plus it feels a lot nicer too, the Shimano feels a bit like a toy whereas the daiwa is solid. As another poster says, the penn is worth a look. They make bloody good reels for a much nicer price tag

I second this actually, my mate has the affinity 3 spod reel and it's lovely to use, heavy though.

I have the diawa Spods and I have the Shimano ( also got another make I can not think off ) in this occasion it would one of the few ID choose Shimano over Diawa as its so much lighter and less clunky feeling.
I've found the Penn Affinity 7000 Ltd to be pretty bomb proof as a spod reel. Decent clip, a good size and weight and no auto close on the bail arm.
I tried the affinity spod but for me the size and weight was OTT.
