For those that don't know Snatching is illegal ,a way of foul hooking fish..those that got fined,obviously not born in this country either !

Poor river getting hammered.
Also read some of the other older stories on there involving Salmon and Gill nets elsewhere in wales..

River Weir Durham City , opposite the old ice rink used to be shoulder to shoulder with both locals and those that travelled from far and wide with snatchers.
Eventually and only about five years ago ALL angling was stopped at that location and for the first couple of seasons heavily policed.
Seen it done at Whitby when a big fish got trapped behind a breakwater in the harbour when I was a child.
The Harbour Master was straight out and after the local youth responsible. I was impressed how fast a fat old Harbour Master could run.

That Harbour master has my utmost respect for sure..
I've never seen it in the flesh or entirety, Snatching...surely completely against the ethos and spirit of fair angling methods that are legal..
I've seen set long lines ,on a local ressi,which is actually fairly barren due to location and acidity..I corrupted the lines ie ,wound em up, n burnt them.

I saw it happening when i was out in Croatia. They had a long length of string with what looked like a 6 oz lead for sea fishing with lots spike attached, they would spin it round and let it fly out into the sea as far as they could. They then would retrieve it as fast as they could by hand in the hope that they foul hooked something.
But, it looked tedious, I never saw anything being caught.

That is going on in Essex all the time, I go around ponds with a grapling hook trying to find bunging lines attached to trees

My 2 brothers are snatchers but it's a term I use because they are match fishermen along with calling them tiddler bashers as well 😂😂

Yes,I see what you mean..but at what point does Snatching become fishing ,or fishing for food ,and therefore it could be construed as not angling by fair means..there is a difference I think..
It's a interesting subject and potentially subjective ,to anglers ,but not fishermen..
