A spod reel wants a fast retrieve but it's not reeling any heavy resistance.
A marker reel might be reeling in balls of weed from 80 yards so needs more torque/power...
I used to use a small shimano aero gt 8010 but when I moved onto bigger and weedier waters I needed some cranking power so used a shimano long cast.
Yes, it heavy but I really do prefer the ease of the baitrunner for marker rod work.
I "upgraded" my marker reel to a medium shimano xt-a baitrunner, it is lighter but feels undergunned when there is some weed on the end, it just lacks the cranking power.
Would the big xt-a be any better, or should I just go back to the old, solid work horse.

I've had the daiwa emblem, loads of people use it but I hated it, big heavy no thrills reel but will last.
I've used my mates ultegra spod reel, really nice. But I had the ultegra xtd reels to fish with and didn't like them as lime kept getting rapped under the spool.
Wychwood dispatch I had before the avid I use now but it got stolen with other things, only had it a couple of weeks but did a good job tbf, only thing that was a tad annoying is bailarm had to be in the perfect spot.
I got an avid spod n marker reel last year as was only about 55 quid from go outdoor ls and that's great too, the retrieve is massive maybe even the biggest and the reel isn't massive and cumbersome either. Longevity is the only question really.

Ultegra spod has the fast retrieve and fast drag. The fast retrieve is great for spod work but does this mean you lose the cranking power if using it as a marker reel and trying to reel back a ball of weed?
Anyone use the shimano aerlex xtb spod reel (the slightly smaller version), does this work as a marker reel?

I have the ultegra spod on both my spod and marker rods and never had a problem.

I've been using the Okuma Custom Spod reel for 6 months now. It's pretty good, I think. I got it on AD for £26 delivered and came spooled with 30lb braid.
I will be upgrading before heading to France, and have been eyeing up the Ultegra. I will watch this thread!

I saw an okuma spod reel with free braid in a local tackle shop yesterday, all looked OK, smooth, quickish drag, but a plastic handle shaft that would ultimately fail.
I checked out other okuma spod reel variants (there are two or three) on ebay and found this one, with a metal handle shaft.
For £35 I have taken a punt on it. I will report back once I have had a play with it.
The braid looks a bit overfilled so I will strip 20-30 yards off.

I have bought a shimano aerlex 7000 xta spod reel to have a try with.
The baitrunner 2 spool cap means I can go from locked to freespool in quarter of a turn so it should do me fine.
I will just have to see if the high gear ratio has enough poke for easy reeling in of balls of weed.
The reels are a bit heavy though.

Daiwa Spod or if you're not bothered about colour source an Emblem Pro / Emblem X5000A / Emblem Z5000A with a bite n run cap - exactly the same reel / reverse taper ABS spool / cranking power - arguably the Emblem models are better built but you'll need to upgrade the line clips

I did consider a daiwa, i had the emblem xa reels for a while (like the z) and it had great cranking power.
I did consider the bite and run caps for a switch between locked and bait runner (for paying line out on my marker rod) but think it needs a fair bit of thumb pressure to flip them???

I use a Spod/Marker Hybrid rod, so the same reel for marker and Spomb/spod.
I decided to leave the original Aerlex 8000 on my dedicated Spod rod, and put a Shimano Beastmaster reel on the Marker/spod rod.
This is the latest incarnation, and shop around they are sensible money.

No - you just need to set them right. Having used Emblem S6000Ts & X5000As as spod / marker reels for decades they work fine - you could alternatively just do a QD conversion / speed cap. Best reels for total abuse . . .

This should do exactly what I need.
Just a quarter of a turn from locked to just slack enough to pay off line to my marker float.
Shimano xta 7000 spod reel, braid mainline and braid shockie.
