So how long do you stay on a perticular lake?
I am fortunate to have membership for 2 lakes
1 is a lifelong love affair since my parents first took me there when I was 11 years old, 41 years ago. A beautiful place where I learnt my trade in all species and fortunately the lake in question had carp in as well. Horrible when it was closed to angling for the best part of 10 years but recently opened up again. Very exciting being back again last year with new mystery as to what was still in there and new fish that had been born in the lake.
Apart from being back at my favourite place I use it for testing, rigs, baits etc for use at lake 2
The second is a long way from home, big ticket price but has P.B. potential as has already been the case twice and has significant further P.B. possibilities.
Also a lovely place with the bonus of massive carp but I dont see it as a ticket for the long term. If I'm fortunate enough to catch my targets then I would be happy to move onto pastures new.
I would never in a million years think of leaving my first love though. Used to make me very melancolly when I walked the lake when fishing was not allowed. I now fish it as if each trip may be my last, once bitten and all that.
So how do you think about the lakes you fish? Love being there or just a means to an end?

I have 2 lakes, zero targets and that's why I stay there.1 has a fifty , both have cliques I want nothing to do with. I'll not leave either of them, they're too special .

A very good thoughtful post,I read only the other day about a chap whose had to hang up his rods,he's now in a retirement home but still writes and posts about fishing..
One day,that's going to be me...so I get out into the countryside as much as I can,..as far as lake love goes,I also understand that ,as I'm similar to you cept one I know it's 35 yrs and the the other 31 yrs ,I knew the latter as a sheep field,and like life ,I have been through good times and bad,predation,pollution,silly spoilt anglers ,well they called themselves anglers,anyway those places are very special..
Conversely I got invited to an exclusive water,It had and has massive potential ,sadly I didn't get the feeling I like for the venue,or the individual that again call themselves anglers,so in a nutshell its not only about the lake sometines,but people who make or break a fishery,ie atmosphere..
If you've got a place ,close to your heart,treasure it,every second because one day it won't be there..and that's life sadly..

Im 54....i started fishing at the age of 9 on one lake.....all these years later, i run it...i love it....i'll never give it up, nor get bored of it
on the other hand, i joined a pit i fell in love with....fished it for 5 or 6 years, left, not because of the place, more due to the fact of a few of its members...i was either going to jail, or upset the owner, and other members, of which wasnt fair...so i walked away

Never stay very long, maybe a few years, once I get to know a venue and have caught the ones I want I'm looking for someway new. I've been fortunate enough to fish a few remote places in stunning location with a few stunning fish and on these I've been the only one there but they only hold a few small fish but I don't like repeat captures so move on. Lately I find rivers and canals more interesting. Couldn't fish anywhere that's busy as I love the peice and quiet.

One place ,owner is 85,every year,Xmas or new year down they come ,coffees pasties,etc...they can just about walk now,I thank them very much,and raise a cup to the old chap ,I fished with from a young age ,when I cycled every where to fish,no mean feat where I live that,I cherish every single moment, when the time comes,and it is coming I will be very sad...
Other place,spiritual home,end of...
Places are out there, you have to look,work hard at forming relationships with owners farmers etc,but if your passionate, have a love for quiet places,you can still find a corner of solitude in the mad corrupt ,monetary society we are born into ,long may it last..
Today,I backed what I have just said,I may have sole rights to another water,another chapter in my angling..
Remember, to one and all,it's not what you have cosmetically,it's memories,good times,and special places...surround yourselves with decent people and contacts,good things happen,..
I care about the countryside it's fast being destroyed..treasure it..

Funny how some places really really get under your skin and others, maybe as beautiful with bigger fish have a different atmosphere/vibe. My first lake still makes me catch my breath at times
I agree with the previous posts regarding zero targets, probably takes the self imposed pressure off so you can just enjoy being lakeside albeit still fishing hard.
I used to have a challenge with myself where I'd aim to have a P.B. that was more than my age
Age is winning at the moment
I've fished my first lake equally if not harder than the bigger fish water with carp twice the size but I've had more fun at my local lake, fully tuned in and the next overnighter can never come quick enough.
I Still need the second lake though as the desire to catch a monster is still too strong a compulsion to ignore.
I will always strive to catch the biggest fish in the lake but having a break to a special no target lake to allow time to regroup/re plan is great. Bit like going for a fag break when I smoked, solved many a problem being away from the problem even for a short while

My tickets are for life. You can prise them from my cold dead hands.
If somewhere is special and the ticket is used, then keep it.
One thing I hate is people sitting on unused tickets, its like buying a car and refusing to drive it, madness.

I have Honorary Life Membership of a Colne Valley club and a Ticket for a top River Trent club that I will keep for as long as its possible for me to fish dont think I will ever need any other tickets ever

Yep I totally agree. Years ago I had a Jachdaw syndicate ticket. It was a great ticket, really good bunch of lads, limited numbers, great fishing, secure, otter fenced. Not an easy ticket to drop. But due my wife's poor health I just wasn't able to use it, I just couldn't keep it and not use it when I knew there was a long list of guys who'd love the ticket and actually be able to use it. So I dropped it. Wouldn't mind another crack at it one day as I never had the time to get to grips with it. Feels like unfinished business.

A good lake for me is not whether it has target fish but a good group of members and somewhere I like to be (catching or not), having a decent stamp of fish is a bonus but not a deal breaker I will happily catch singles and doubles as opposed to catching 30's and 40's so long as the venue is peaceful and harmonious and it's not like shelling peas.
