I was watching the lake the other day while fishing and i noted the different methods of baiting up going on and i sat and wondered to myself why we are all casting these bright red and white contraptions out to bait up. Is it becouse we are being more efficient anglers or is it becouse we are all sheep ?
Not quite as clear cut as that but its not particularly stealthy some of these contraptions crashing into the surface and opening up especially in the middle of winter when i dont believe the carp are actively searching for food 24/7 . I noticed 2 lads put say 12 large red spomb type device full out , a few times it didnt open, and when it did hit the surface it made a hell of a impact. i would say that any carp nearby would have done the off and wont be back anytime soon. I also saw another fella using a spod and everytime it discharged fine and was very quiet hitting the water. My point is really that in most situations the spod seems to me a more stealthy option and probably a third cheaper. I appreciate liquids / maggots / other stuff be more suited to the spomb or dot spod or whatever but a lot of bait is perfect in a spod.
It seems to me the tackle manafacturers have peddled these contraptions relentlessly since the spomb came out, mk 1, 2 and 3 and made a huge amount of money off it when a simple spod would have done the job just fine 90 % of the time.
Would be interested to see who uses what these days , I personally will be reaching for the spod more often than not this year see if it makes any difference.

Its very true that you can lay a spod down with much less disturbance than a spomb, and a spomb really needs to crash down to open consistently.
Spombs allow sloppy mixes or liquids to be used so better suited to high attract and low feed winter conditions.

While you're at it, you could trade in your modern car with air conditioning and great fuel economy for a 1988 ford escort with rusty wheel arches and a squeaky fan belt.

Spods are better if you are trying to bait up at 80 yard and 25 yards all in the same cast.

Not everything that's modern is better nothing wrong with a ford escort it' is worth a small fortune those who bought one paid around £1200 new used it for 45 years now worth 10 times the price I wouldn't mind owning ten I changed went back to a spod to much faffing around not opening and fiddling around filling it spod is faster imo

I think spods have a place to be fair, however theyre much harder work to retrieve than a spomb and as someone has said if you're pelting it out you always lose some out the back.
Much prefer a spod.
I did use a spomb for a while, but the noise was just embarrassing, and out of respect for my fellow anglers, I went back to the less conspicuous device.

That's where the dot spod comes in. Has the sealed compartment like the spomb, but you can lay it down on the surface gently like a spod and it still opens. Best of both worlds

I used a spider spomb and can get that to open really quiet

Better than a spomb or a spod, I prefer my Prologic "Airbomb" as there is no impact with the water, just the bait scattering on the water and the "Airbomb just flutters down to the surface well away from the baiting up area.
Also with the "Airbomb" you can "Lay " it down on the water like a spod, wind it back in and "Strike" it over your baited area to release its contents.
But despite that, I find it useless above 70 yards with mono so its best to use braid. And then I find, it works perfectly and for no reason at all, for love or money it does not want to work correctly and I can never find a reason as to why and switch back to my spomb.
I would have thought by now, the mechanism of how they work would have been improved on though.
Personally, I don't find much difference in the impact on the water between a spomb and a spod and what there is, is because my large spomb is delivering a bigger load than my large spod hence it is heavier, reduce its load and its quieter. If I switch to a medium or small Spomb, both of which I prefer, the impact is then less than my large spod.

For many carp anglers, "study to be quiet" went out of the window many years back.

More's the pity. Audible radios, alarms, phone conversations, you name it, it's everywhere now. Even the sounds of bait boats annoy me.

I used to use a spod, now use both spombs and a spider spod. No problem opening with either one but the reeling back with the spomb and spider is so much easier than the old spods. As for the noise, a spomb or spider is no louder hitting the water than the spods of equal size and weight. We all know how to let the spod, spomb or spider hit the clip way above the water by holding the rod high and vertical and all the types hit nose first with the minimal possible splash.

It may be the minimum possible, but it's still a big crash. I use spombs on some lakes but on others I fish they are the kiss of death. I know people say carp respond to the sound like ringing a dinner bell. Sadly that is not my experience.
