To date i have been using a couple of cheap medium sized spombs which i picked up in Auchan for about 3 gbp each. I would say they open on 8 out of 10 casts. They worked well enough for me last season, both still intact and ready to go again.
For the upcoming season I'm wondering if it is worth investing in a few of the more expensive spombs that go for around 15 to 20 gbp each? Does anyone have any experience of using the cheap low cost spombs vs the more expensive ones? They all look pretty much the same to me, i'm wondering if it is it worth paying the extra 15 gbp to get better quality, and what improvements would i see? Do the more expensive ones cast further - are they more aerodynamic, do the seal closed better, do they have a better opening rate, are they more robust, etc?
I have heard only bad things about the Fox Spomb, that it fails to open regularly, so i will give it a swerve.
Is there any particular brand/model of spomb worth considering?

I bought some cheap Spombs from a Chinese ebay seller.
I had to file some of the edges and change the swivel before I was happy with them, the proper ones are finished better but not worth the extra in my opinion. The dearer ones don't cast any better. If you lose a cheap one or it breaks then it's no big deal, different matter with a £15 one.

I have had a cheap red Chinese large Spomb copy on my Spomb rod for 2 years now and it's going strong. All I did was change the swivel and link it came with.
Have 2 more in my spares bucket unused if I lose or break that one.

i wont buy the genuine ones, the cheap Chinese ones are fine for me 80% opening upon impact is fine and the other 20% is probably down to user error tbh. I just change the swivel provided and away we go. Why pay £14 when £3 delivered does the same job.

Thanks for the feedack, it seems unanimous, spombs at £15 to £20 just aint worth the extra money. I'll stick to using the low cost ones then.

Imo the Nash dot spod is better than the spomb, mainly because it's easier to load . The size is similar to a midi spomb too, and they fly very well

The best spomb type i found for longer range as it opens every time and you can cast off the deck is the wolf spider spomb.
Dot spod is good as pretty much always opens but doesn't cast as well as spomb and is quite heavy also cant fit as much bait in it.
Standard medium spomb is decent good all-rounder but doesn't always open.

I've tried all the spombs apart from the spider thingy and by far the best imho is the dot spod. It's light and flies further and truer than anything else I've used and can be loaded one handed, not the biggest capacity but I can put up with that, oh and mines never failed to open.

Agree with the dot spod - easier to control and cast further with accuracy. Just takes more casts to get the bait out.
Have had issues with some regular spods not opening which led me to the dot spod which I really like.

Right then, i'll be buying a dot spod in time for the start of the season. I've just watched a few YouTube clips on it and it does look the business.
Slightly off topic question, who can tell me best knot to use for tying shock leader to the mainline?
