Not crayfish, but shot, skinned, rabbit and squirrel before now...

Guy who lives near me known as Road kill man,aka my old local school teacher, and ex world orienteering champ..does not buy food ,just picks it up on the local roads, freezes it....apparently otter tastes like beef,I don't know..

This is true, check out Arthur Boyt..on Google.. lol

If that's the guy I'm thinking of, he's quite a strange chap. Hats off to him slicing and dicing road kill.

So,I'm always out n about...last year,my dog was indicating something to me,I walk over to this thickett and see a young muntjac, caught up in some rusty wire, its leg awful, white bone clearly poking out..

The animal was in terrible distress...my gun was indoors..

So I go up the farm, speak to the farmers wife, she makes a call,by the time I get back down, two quadders.. have shot ,and skinned the deer,my dog had part of its leg....

What a very odd reply to a question about crayfish. Nutter alert

To the OP - you need a licence from the EA to trap non-native crayfish in the UK. I believe the licence is free, but get caught without one and you risk prosecution. I actually know someone who got in hot water over this - he was trapping them for a club and selling them .

Unlike some, when I do get them, I put them back. Eating them, fine by me, but those stamping on them are just ****ers. I see it now and again, really gets my goat and it's always carp anglers I am sorry to say. I know they're a pain, but they still live there. You'd soon get the arse ache if people drop kicked carp back into the lake.

Yes caught a few last week and put them on the BBQ, just ate the tails but they were very tasty.

Unless the law has changed that's a questionable question to ask

You needed a license to trap Crays full stop, a odd law given its designed to protect white which are getting as rare as rhs thanks to the red invader but god bless RED tape

In answer to your question, on a water I was on they were caught for commercial purposes (sold to restaurants) but they needed starving for at least 3 days to 'flush' them through. Also better to flush in fresh water to get rid of earthy taste.

Baiting, yes they work but by god do thet attract their own.

They like steep banks where they burrow, on a sunny day they will sit at the entrance like any good predator, looking for a opportunity. I do know if you can spot them you can dazzle them with sun from a mirror and you can pick them out, didn't believe it till I saw it.

On a French water I was on the locals used washing machine drums to catch them, then they put some logs in it and cooked them on the top!

Edit, if the margins are shallow and you leave your net in it, its surprising what discarded boilies attract!

Show a bit more respect please to a fellow forum user and angler. This Isn't school, why not go off piste and discuss other food to forage?

No,not a nutter,...merely pointing out food sources are out there which are free, tasty and most likely more good for you..

Did you know crayfish, non native have reduced the native population of this countries indigenous crayfish..so hats off to anyone who likes a mini lobster on the bank ,tasty...

I live in a rural place,so my life and experience is a lot different to others ,I do know one thing...I'd live much ,much longer than most others,as I can hunt, fish to eat, forage and make shelters,...

Where as,in a city,...in a shtf scenario....that would be challenging,..as you can imagine....hence my long term interest in Bush craft and survivalist..

Remember, ina town or city your rely on others, myself,I would rely on myself, big difference...👍

Again, not on post but my Mrs used to travel the 'over Alderley' road on her way to work in Macclesfield and a stretch was/is known as death Valley. I used to ask her to pick up 'road kill' when she worked Saturdays and it was quiet. Our Dachs used to love it, I didn't much like it when perfectly good looking Rabbit was all but crushed inside but looking mint outside.
Got to say the Dachs didnt see a fair few Pheasant
Are you sure?
