Can anyone recommend the best gripping / locking system for rod butts when fishing locked up? The rod butt diameter is pretty narrow - 30-40mm.

Take a look at either the solar adjustable or Matrix do one that clamps onto the rod and only my releases when you press a button.

I now have rods with abbreviated butt handles and find the ESP ones ideal and are also cheap compared to many others

All the rods I use now have slim duplon handles. The ESP heads work very well. They are simple, small, and cheap and i have not lost a rod yet. They come in 3 sizes I believe. Having said that they cannot be mechanically locked.

Yes, another vote for the ESP ones, whether you have full duplon or abbreviated, both sizes of the grips are superb.

If you absolutely don't want anything moving whilst fishing locked up then this set up takes some beating. I'm fishing locked up to snag trees as I type this. Jag lockdown butt rests with the tightest insert I can get away with for my rods, coupled with the Jag Rod Locker quick release bungy. This ain't going anywhere on the take. Please excuse the fact I've got red inserts with my green lockdown. I forget to pick a set of green up. Schoolboy error.

I'm not sure I can deal with the shame of non matching gear. I might have to trade my Delkims in for red ones now. I wonder if any tackle shops are open on my way home.
