Hello,

I have a Anatec bait boat and its looking a bit on the rough side at the moment.
Its been coated in a camo pattern paint and i want to strip this off and re spray it in black.

I think its made of ABS plastic, what would be the best way to clean it of the old paint?
I have had a look on google and some suggest brake fluid, anyone suggest this or something else.

Surely simply flat it with fine wet n Dry is all you need to do ? probably something like 600 grade ??

but Im sure someone will come along that knows and advise on the correct pre spray size grit you would need to use ???

its only a bait boat not a flipping car

I wouldn't put brake fluid anywhere near it as it has a tendency to melt stuff like plastic, as Oldgeezer said a light sand and respray is all that is needed.

Brake fluid 😳😳😳😳 I wouldn't put brake fluid anywhere near it....it will get into the plastic and will make any new paint bubble and peel off. Best off sanding, using a good primer and then colour of choice. If you sand back to bare plastic then a proper plastic primer would be a good idea and depending how keen you get maybe a coat of lacquer at the end.

just leave it ratty..the fish won't mind..

If its not been plastic primered just use a scourer as the paint won't have adhered properly.

I tried wet and dry but the 300 grit i was using is taking forever, there must be some kind of paint stripper out there that is suitable for ABS?

Just get it hydro dipped black and don't worry about stripping it lol
Or can't you just get skins like some of the alarms have

If your spraying over it, surely you dont need to get it all off? Just give it a sand so the new paint or primer has a key to grip, then spray it.

300 grit is way too fine to remove much paint. (You know that now)
Start with something like 180 or coarser then work up.
If you are using water then you would need to dry it very well before paint.
A powered sander would be quickest if you have one.
I don't know of any paint stripper that is safe.

Try the back of a stanley knife to scrape it off, failing that as said much coarser sand papaer and a powered sander.

Just ordered some 120 and 220 grit, hopefully with the 320 as well will get a decent finish for primer and paint.
Maybe have to buy some 400/600 to.

once sanded down, use plastic primer, then 400/600 then topcoat also a plastic specific one if you can find it

You'll need a plastic primer first, it's what they use on car bumpers etc before applying a primer, its usually clear and very easy to get runs in so apply light coats
