Is there any difference in the bodies of the 5000 and 5500 or is it just spool capacity that's different?

its a mix and match if you like 
. I have these reels and had a set of both sizes of spools. The 5000 is Ideal for fishing smaller venue's and the 5500 is useful when fishing Large Venues, e.g. Big Pits or Large Waters abroad.

I've had the 5500 for 2 decades, just looked up the specs and quite surprised to see the Daiwa site says only 70m 14lb difference between the 2!

Totally bullet proof but weigh a ton. The 5000 size holds more than enough line to fish anywhere. The 5500 is just a waste of line.

+1. I've got cabontex on 1, ice washrrs on the other, different clips on different sets too, Jim's on 1, Weston on the other, prefer the Weston, easier to put on to due to shorter spring.
@ post 7, for normal fishing maybe but I disagree abroad.

I've just fitted the western ones to mine. Nice easy job.
But I did source some perfect size rubber washers to sit under the clip on the outside. Has made fitting the line in the clips so much easier and adds grip

You'll want the m3 if using the western line clips. Fit absolute perfect. And match the clip head size so can't really be seen. 0.5mm thick

Do you put these on while fitting the line clip, or do they go on after the clip has been fitted?

The outside between clip head and spool rim.
My only critique of the aftermarket clips, the diameter of the clip stud is a bit lose in the bore of the spool hole, my clips move quite a bit, doesn't aid clipping up. As these washers raise the clip head it might mitigate this a bit.

Before fitting the clip pal slide it done the shaft.
And yea these washers take up a fair bit of slack to be honest. I did speak to western about supplying them with the Kit but they took it the wrong way to start with. I wasn't being funny just thought they were a benefit.
Can't hardly see washer when fitted. And that was one I made up before sourcing some better ones

I can't remember the name of my line clips but now I've seen yours mine aren't Weston.
So I guess I can't use these washers?
Oh well never mind, it's not as if it was a problem, I just was just curious.

Just measure them if you want pal. Westerns were around 3mm diameter through the spool and 7mm head size.

When you fit the new line clips make sure you are in a place where you can find the bits when they go flying onto the floor. Fiddly job is putting it mildly.

That's a good idea with the rubber washer. I've not fitted the western ones I think mine were from custom reel king. I always loop a length of power gum under the clip and tape it to the spool. Does same sort of job as your washers and looks neat once the line is on and hardly seen. Not as good as the washer idea though.

The Weston are very user friendly due to the shorter spring, I did those on my own, the Jims reels ones though, better wear glasses to protect your eyes
Someone on here posted a nice little tip to tie the spring up before fitting, I can see that working nicely. Another tip someone posted, a forked implement to push the spring down the clips shaft.

I think the custom reel king ones are probably the same as Jim's. They are a pain to fit. I've got bloody great big hands though, so that doesn't help matters! I made a little tool out of a bent paper clip to friction grip round the spigot and push the spring down while then using small forceps to hold and push on the spring clip.

I love infinities. I wouldn't swap them for any other reels. As said on another thread recently I've got 9 of them and use them on all my sets of rods except when using my light 2.25tc rods or stalkers where I use emblem X's and longbeams ss's. Neither of those are a patch on infinities though. All the usual superlatives apply. They are just superbly built, and I just don't see that in most of the current crop of reels.

Easiest way I found was tweezers. Holds the cir-clip and small tips to push spring back all in one

I agree. My idea of superbly built is the fact they aren't too tight tolerance wise which is seen by others as a fault, but that's what makes them so durable, great coffee grinders..lol
My latest set are around 12 years old but haven't been used much for half of that but my original set, probably as old, got hammered, neither was/has been serviced.
Funnily enough I had a convo with the Mrs yesterday saying I'd like to feel/try one of the newer Daiwa Basia for comparison, I bet the gearing is so much 'tighter' for want of a better word.
I'd never own a set, just like I never followed the trend for Tournies way back when for one simple reason, I like using a bait runner.
There's one mod I'd like to see, I bet someone's prob had it done, a longer forward taper spool with associated internal changes to wormshaft & gearing etc, basically like a Basia baitrunner

I have a set of three and associated spare spools for each, i havent converted the line clips (yet!). Currently loop a small piece of 'empty' leadcore outer under the clips to act as a buffer. Works a treat as it did on my old tournies. No damage or pinching of the line.
