I'm getting a bit peed off with the braid that came with my Okuma Custom spod reel.
I have two of these reels for marker and spomb rods. The reels are not too bad but the pre-loaded braid is a pain in the ass.
Is there a more reliable anti frap braid. Do I have to buy some expensive stuff...
It doesn't have to be super thin, only fishing to 100yds or so.
I have had two fraps on my marker rod today and was lucky to get my float, lead and shock leader back.

I've had good success with the new red trakker braid. Hitting 120+ without any fraps. However I do always make sure the braid is wet before I cast.

Are you wetting the braid before every cast. If not try that and see if the fraps stop.

I'm wetting the braid before the first cast, and as I'm reeling in the marker or spomb the braid is then wet ready for the next cast.
I have noticed I'm more likely get a frap with a longer drop, maybe a foot below the joint.
If I shorten the drop to the joint or just above its less likely.
I have removed a fair bit of braid already and it's still happening.

found that this happened when the spools were overfilled as the line was coming off too fast.
by slightly underfilling the spools it creates a bit of friction on the cast that seems to slow the braid coming off enough to prevent it frapping
I found that underfilling with braid doesn't seem to affect casting distance as much as nylon due to it being supple & having a lower diameter.

It comes from when you reel in, loose braid on the spool causes it, it is then picked up by the layers below on the cast. Worst thing is winding in too fast, if the spomb starts popping on the surface you will get slack line as you reel in. Not that it's feasible but if you wind in though a towel you will never get a frap up again.
Try winding in with the rod tip low to the water and to the side as if you are dragging a lead, you get some resistance on the line and also avoid the spomb popping, watch out for iit and then look at the line lay on your spool if it does

Agree, overshooting is not good, I find a big diameter braid lays better on the spool too, just not as good for distance

I agree that not overfilling the spool is the key to braid success. I blamed J Braid, some Gardner and Power Pro before I found out that it's not the braid but how it's loaded. Now leave a good 10mm space to the spool lip when loading up and genuinely never frap. That's using different braids on spod, marker and all my fishing rods. All different diameters and profiles and I never bother to wet the braid on any of them.
I have already removed 70+ yards, maybe I could strip some more off, picture below.
It's happening with the marker as well as the spomb so it's not because of loose line.
When I reel the spomb in I angle the rod tip to stop the spomb skipping and making loose loops.

I was convinced braid needed to be wet untill I started casting dry braid over a field. I have had very few frap ups with dry braid, and I believe its because I'm reeling in the line under tension. As others have said, the spomb dancing on the water leaves loose spools of line on your reel.

Could also just be the braid, I have used a cheap marker braid off ebay that frapped up all the time on 30 to 40 yard chucks. Problem went away the second I respooled

In my experience that is still well overfilled for braid. I would want at least 5mm space from the spool lip down to the braid, I have even more.

I'm pretty sure it happens because the braid is too loose on the spool. Make sure it's under constant tension when reeling in.

Yep, totally agree 👍 Also worth noting the comment re tension, best to keep the spod/ float steady on the retrieve, ie in the water rather than in than skipping and repeat. If it skips you'll have areas of braid that are looser than other and typically that's where you'll get the fraps, though it's less of a problem once the braids fully saturated.
I'd keep removing the braid until you get no more wraps, even to 5mm under filled.
If it still does it then, it might be the braid

Dip your tip under the water when retrieving marker/spomb.It helps wet the braid more and stops the skipping you mention

I have this exact reel, if it's the same braid that comes supplied on it, I found it a absolute pig to use and constantly getting knotted, I've now relegated this to my 10ft setup and bought some spomb mono as it's shorter distance casting. If you want to stick with braid I've been using the Gardner stuff, found it way better to use

Now I've seen the reel and braid in question I can confirm this braid is absolute tosh.
My step dad bought this reel and had no end of hassle with the braid. We changed it to J braid and it's been fine since.
If you're still having issues with it after removing some then I'd recommend changing it. Do note that this reel has mono as backing line.

Yep, also used to regularly cup water over the spool, see more and more of that shown nowadays. I'm not like most of the modern anglers, I haven't used a spod for a very long time, mine are the likes of MCF pocket rockets and early holed types, I've never used the modern spomb type deliveries and probably never will, not with my shoulder now!

tbf the reels are dirt cheap,a spool of decent braid probably costs as much as the reel and braid combo
