I used to see a lot of it on social media, from the Germans mostly, of hand held videos of rods screaming off. Instead of picking the rod up, the first thing they grab is their phone and start recording.

Recently I've seen it a lot more on British waters. I commented on a well known anglers social media the other day when they had done it, and was told, "it's only a few seconds it's fine"

Delkims social media seems to be full of people doing this.

Is it just me that thinks this is a terrible angling practice that really needs to stop?

Not really constructive.

A lot of younger, and newer anglers watch social media and look up to these anglers and companies to show what is right and wrong in fishing. I think it's harmful to our sport for these people /companies to promote these kinds of things. Me not watching them has 0 impact on that.

When they get older they will realise that they are all only false idols and not worth a w..k
How is it any different to any of the current things people are talking about
re hooking fish
Using a twig
Fishing a fixed lead
Using hormones
Fishing where you shouldn't
Using a snide rod
All things these false idols do and youngsters can follow

Can you honestly say you don't do anything wrong
Ever sat more than 2 m away from your rods
Wandered into a mates swim
Sleep in a bivvy overnight as technically that's against the rules..

Maybe I'm too old to care what the youngsters think or whether that kind of stuff is worth worrying about

At the end of the day there's bigger issues going on in the world that are more worthy of worrying about more.

That's your opinion, nowt wrong with that.
Mine, I wouldn't describe it as terrible, just a bit of fun, but context is everything.
I must admit, I have in the past, and may do again in the future if it takes my fancy, pause before lifting into a bite, love the sound of a screaming alarm, would I film it...no, it's not me, but why not if you want too.
I wouldn't do it if in any way risking the fish, snags etc, or if it may be an annoyance to anyone nearby, be they angler or not.

Some People in England haven't got a roof over their heads.
Old people are again almost at the point of putting their heating on for half an hour a day because they can't afford to keep the whole house warm and eat.

Horses for courses. It's a fishing forum. If we only posted about
Real life or death issues it wouod shut up shop.

One of the key parts of the excitement of this pastime has got to be seeing the reel spool spinning as a carp tears line off it and the alarm is screaming

If people have the time to film this they are fishing for ****ters or have too much time on their hands

Downside is, most people nowadays have a rough idea what's on the end of it before they have netted it, sadly

I'm with you on this.

If I get a couple of bleeps I'm watching the bobbins preying they rip off. I'm not thinking about setting the camera up for a screaming take.

Anyway 9 times out of ten it's the wind and I sit back in my chair and relax

That's you. That's what you sound like. It's a very odd position to hold.

I remember a good few years back, a young lad saw me stalking in a very tight little swim, no more than a cut out in a bush. He asked what I was doing and I explained, showed him how the fish held up in areas they felt safe etc. Next week I found him set up in that same swim with 3 rods, all crammed in there.

Big companies, and big "supserstar" anglers need to take responsibility of what they're posting IMO. It MAY be safe to grab your phone and start filming your run in certain situations, but it's completely avoidable risk. Set up a static camera if you really want to film the run.

Fox even recently had a video on YouTube, where they left in the footage, of the guy faffing around with his camera on a tripod trying to set it up as his rod was tearing off. I think it's a bad practice, I don't understand how anyone can really defend it.

they care about selling as much product to the “kids” as they can so they get paid from their sponsors.

Just remember next time you are sleeping on your bedchair zipped up in your bivvy
That by the time you have put your shoes on and got to the rod
You have possibly taken the same length of time to get to your rod as little Johnny took to film his run.

Just a thought,
Always make sure your own house is in order before you criticise anyone else.

Its not the type of thing I would do but it can be easy done.

Just buy a "Dash Cam" and set it up in location and have it connected to a 12v Battery. As these types of camera keep recording and when the memory card is full, it just keeps looping and rewriting over what has been recorded. I have one, the battery is US in it, but it works connected to a 12v Battery. I plan one day to set it up and use it as a CCTV in the house as a wild life cam near the bird feeders and bath etc

Alternatively use an "Action Cam" or a "Wildlife Cam", which should do the same if run off a power pack.

Also look at your phone and see if there are any apps for it. I have one that is in a package of other tools, never used it though so not sure if it works well, but it functions as a CCTV and records when it detects movement.

Back to the filming....a reason not to....and I can't be the only one

You been away for a weeks fishing, you've done quite well, you hear ruddy bite alarms everywhere for the next couple of weeks Would I want to be permanently in that state by reminding myself with a film of a run.

Reminds me of what a great idea (not) it was setting a run as my ring tone many years back...

Same here, I thought what a great idea it would be and so I knew it would be a fishing related friend calling me, I set the ring tone of my ATTX going off for my fishing contacts group. It was a nightmare, even when I could see the receiver was not showing any lit LED's I would be confused as to what was happening and last thing on my mind was it was my phone and someone calling me especially around dusk and dawn when friends on lake would give you a call to see if anything had happened etc.

Lost count of the times I would fly out of the bivvy to hit a run.

I couldn't remember how to change a setting on the Delkim remote the other night, so went onto the website to download the instructions. Confused as **** when i had a take with no led's etc - thought the alarm and remote had packed up in the wet 🤣

Happened to me as well.
Was a great idea when you weren't on the bank.
But after the first time my phone rang when I was fishing and I couldn't find the rod that was screaming I comeback to the usual tone.

I feel like you're just digging yourself in a hole trying to justify your first comments.

I'm sure big companies and named anglers don't care, that's exactly my point. They should. I for one absolutely love this sport, and care about the future of it.

I personally do everything I can to negate risk. This practice is a completely avoidable risk.

You have to bear in mind that when you watch a fishing film etc, that what you see, maybe not what it seems or how it happened.

How easy is it to set up a camera focused on the rod and reel and then fake the run, then later on when someone catches a fish and it gets filmed, edit the two clips to make them the same event. Even dashing out of the bivvy to hit a run can be filmed and edited in.

I always find it strange that on the odd occasion I watch a fishing film etc, they always catch the "target fish" in the last 10 minutes of the program. Basically I think they catch it at some point in the filming, maybe the first session but then edit in all the other fish that may have been caught before and even afterwards if the target fish was caught too early. It all adds to the drama and suspense.

Yes I agree that goes on. But what I'm referring to is the amateur type footage posted on social media and shared by big companies. Check out any of delkims social media for examples.

That's how it happens. Been on a syndicate with one of the industry big players who did a film. And the order on the film of captures wasn't how he had them.

I also don't get the thing with having the reels right next to the alarms, and unless using a really slack clutch (for better take videos!), the rods being pulled off the rest. Or the alarm banging into the buzzer. Apart from when using a pod, when they aren't long enough, why don't people have the butt ring “reel” side of the buzzer? You get better indication with danglers too. I remember a Korda one where tips were being dipped deep and literally every take had the rod being dragged off the buzzer. Great to tho I guess.

You also have to laugh when people describe every fish they catch as stunning, immaculate, banger, etc - especially the ones missing scales with blotches on and manky fins 😂

I can get my head around light indicators tight up to the alarm.

Fairbrass is terrible for it. Always demonstrates how it gives great indication, as he pulls the the line and either beeps because he pulled line off the spool, or the indicator bounces down. They might as well not use Indictators.

Think it depends, I don't think it's great if it's taking ages to get your phone and it's now half way across the lake or obviously snaggy. I record my fishing for myself and put the occasional one on YouTube. I have all my camera set up, so if i actually get a take it's a matter of turning it on then push record. I wouldn't spend 5 mins faffing about trying to get it all set up as it's ripping line off the spool. Horses for courses like said
