Looking for a new set of reels for my 9ft rods. Was originally looking at the ci4 5500, as I've got the bigger brother for my 12&13 foot rods. Then started looking at the ss2600 and read that the gs4000 is getting better reviews. Didn't like the look of the gs, but can't now bring myself to buy the ss2600 for more money and less quality.
Any recommendations guys? Shimano and Diawa if possible.

I've paired my 9fts up with some small Shimano baitrunners, 4000fb I think is the name.
Absolutely perfect for the rods and around £55 each

I bought my son 10 ft scopes and fitted shimano 5500 ci4 xtc's on them. They fit nicely and does the job well.
That being said they are also heavy. I have since used my Basiairs on them and although slightly bigger reel weighs less and worked perfectly fine. My mate followed suite and uses his Daiwa Basia SLD reels on his 9ft scopes and it works a treat. Bottom line go for as light possible, dont worry too much about the size

I know you said Daiwa or shimano but Look at the okuma inception inc 6000 perfect size for 9ft rods under £60 cracking reels for the money

Daiwa Whisker SS850 would be great, although hard to come by nowadays. The alternative is the new SS1300.

Looked at the Okuma but it's a no unfortunately.

long term user of ss2600's, they're not 'smooth' feeling like modern reels.... but they are definitely not 'less quality'
The line clip needs upgrading, they need speed caps if you want quick drag (i'm not sure but i think the gs is the same?) and there are some other internal upgrades that make a bit of a difference to the feel. Weston Developments sell a fully upgraded new ss2600 for £220
I haven't used the gs4000, but played with one and it certainly felt a great performing reel - the ss2600 does feel much more 'quality' built, but the gs feels smoother and lighter. One thing to maybe bear in mind, ss2600 hold value very well - not sure the gs is 'cult' enough to do the same.
I also have Baitrunner D's which are amazingly smooth, but also come with an awful line clip.
Both reels feel high quality, just different. Drag on both are top notch. Spool design of the SS2600 is much kinder to line.
I had (and sold) ultegra XTD's, which felt like toys compared to either of the above.

I have one Daiwa GS BR LT 5000-C, the biggest fish so far was a grass carp with about 40 lb. You don't have to worry about the clutch, it was a joy to play the fish on light tackle.

If it helps with your dilemma, you can buy used ss2600 to try, and sell with no loss.
If you buy well and sell well, you may even make a profit!
Lots are sold on eBay that already have upgrades too.

There is a bigger difference in size between the ss2600 and the GS4000 than you may expect. I would advise going to a shop that stocks them both to take a look. For what it's worth, having owned both I prefer the SS2600.
If you do choose the ss2600 and replace the line clips I would avoid the Weston version. Useless if you ever want to use braid.

Just been offered 3 shimano 5500 CI4 XTC. They come in at 440g.

No regrets buying either the baitrunner d's or the SS2600s.
If I had to keep one set, it'd be the daiwas.... Not because they're better, I just like them.
Used both for 3 or 4 years and neither have let me down.
Incidentally, The Baitrunner OC is almost the same reel as the D, but cheaper. Doesn't have the cool gold spool though.

The Weston clips for the ss2600 aren't sprung, they are just a machined slot. If you use braid then the diameter decreases under tension, meaning it just falls out of the slot. Not sure what the thinking was when all of their other clips seem to be sprung for tension against the line.

Ah, that's interesting, I just looked at the website and I can see the one you're talking about - maybe that's a self fit option or something?
Weston definitely do spring loaded ones, I have them in mine.
If you buy the reel upgraded from them, it's definitely a spring loaded one you get.

Yea they are the self fit ones, not sure why they are different to the ones they fit for you, it's only a line clip. I don't have these on a set of rods at the minute, but if I do dig them back out I'll get the custom reel king clips or similar.

I have upgraded SS2600's on my 9ft setup and they are perfect , I upgraded the handles, washers and caps from Western and got upgraded line clips from custom reel king. Perfectly balanced setup.

I've only ever used SS2600 reels on my 9ft rods, I've landed fish to 38lb on them, no issues at all.
I don't feel I need speed caps as I fish with a fairly tight clutch, so not many turns to fully locked up, I actually just prefer to cup the spool .
Still have the original line clips on mine, I just slipped two pieces of power gum elastic down them to add a bit of protection to the mainline.
I've had lots of fish on these and never felt under gunned .

when i spool up i run the 1st turn or 2 through the line clip.
i use them for some 11fts and they work nicely.
rugged reliable and look nice - ok they dont have infinite anti reverse but does it really matter.
I tend not to use the drag much as i started to backwind which means line behaves better on the spool.
If i was bing HYPER picky would be that because the spool is quite small the 15lb mono im forced to use needs a little management initially when i setup.
i did think about trying my gold 4500S's on the same rods but i dont think it be quite as balanced

I use Basia SLDs on 9ft rods. Lovely reels and very light (at a price). I also have a GS4000 reel, and tbh other than the spool it's not all that much smaller.
