Was wanting to buy another Inception 6000, they're now harder to find plus their price has gone up and most dealers are selling at or close to RRP. Also their new flagship BP reel,the Obsidian is just pushing close to £200.. that's way more than previous top end Okuma
models. Are Okuma now catching onto the 'if they want it,they'll pay it' mindset?? Shame if they are..

I think it is more that they have decided to have a serious go at the carp market. They have been producing budget carp/coarse reels for a good 10 years but have always produced high end reels for other disciplines, check out the Makaira range for reference
I have a Helios SX spinning reel and it outperforms anything I've seen from Shimano or Daiwa in the price range.
Maybe the 8k and Inception were just testing the water ahead of new launches.

You could well be right. I've been using small size Okumas for my lure fishing over the last few years. The clutches on them are superb.. #£%& on anything similarly priced by the big brands. Overall quality at a sensible price for sure.. .just hope they don't get greedy.

I think it was future fishing that did a video on the obsidians having stripped one down and they were very impressed with the quality of components used, often found in much more expensive reels.
So they seem pricey for an Okuma but maybe in grand scheme of things, still incredible value for money

Comparable to mags and basia inside apparently. Only negative was the anti reverse switch/mechanism is plastic.

Thought I'd buy a set of these see if they are any good. In the hand they seem pretty much same as their other big pits. Line lay is good, clutch seems smooth and I like the screw in handle. Put a 8000 reducer on and still takes 300+ of 0.35. Matching spare spool is good too. Dubious about the switch to normal line guard like shims have but time will tell. Paid 450 for 3. So same sort of bracket as the fox 12000xc. When I've used them I'll let you know my further thoughts

Ive bought one to test. If its as good as the previous version, the 8k yet faster & lighter, id be worried if I were Dawia or Shimano as it offers, on paper, everything their flag ship models offer but at less than a third of the cost.
So far, id say its almost exactly the same as my Ultegra XTB which were £300 each

I've got 4 of the Okuma 8k's and i really can't find anything to fault them on since i bought them, Great workhorse of a reel.
I have a little Okuma baitrunner that I have had for years, it's on my floater rod and I was using it for spinning up until another purchase, rock solid performer. I believe they make quality reels 
Sure somebody ones told me they made them for Fox at one point, could be wrong?
Posted quite a while ago now, a tackle shop owner told me they make virtually nothing on Shimano and Daiwa so you know where all the profit is going with those, they have a quality reputation and I have used them throughout my life but I can't help but think they have lost there way with the newer stuff and all the bling, living on past reputations for me and there is another market place for other manufacturers if they are competitive enough, the only thing that sells them is the brand name, Okuma and a few others have to be close now, Penn etc

The Okuma, has a fast retrieve, slow oscillation, light weight, loads of ball bearings. Spare spool and even at full RRP, a third of the price of those high end offerings by the known and trusted names.
Surprises me when people just dismiss Okuma as inferior without really looking at what your getting for your money

Aside from the Aventa not one of those reels ever missed a beat, and I rate the Inceptions as one of the best reels I've ever owned. The Aventas however don't give me the same confidence as previous reels; the reel feels stiff to turn and the clutch not as smooth as the inception, and the baitrunner on one doesn't disengage on a handle turn.
I'm hoping my experience with the Aventas is just a blip and not a sign of things to come with Okuma, as for Okuma carp tax most of their range sit in the sub £100 bracket, I can't see a flagship model in the Obsidian doing anything but broaden the range offered from budget to premium.

Forgive me for bumping an old thread but im guessing you have been using the obsidians for some time now.
Would you recommend them?
I have my eye on these as im getting back into fishing and where i am living now, there is a lot of big pits so my 10ft xtractors + INC6000 arent gonna give me the distance.

Tbh for 10ft rods I'd say these are too big going by the spool size, you'd be better off with mini big pits

I've got them on a set of 11ft's and they are fine, maybe size wise they will look too big on 10ft's but they weigh less than 90% of other reels so should balance ok plus if you are mainly going to fish big pits you will probably end up getting some 12/13ft rods in the future
