Absolute bait making novice here. To be honest, I have no clue what I've got and what I need to make a good boilie. some bait making ingredients came up on the bay and for 99p, I thought what's the worst that can happen!
my question is do I need any other ingredients to make my own boilies. what I've bought is
Spirulina 4x1kg unopened
Blood powder 1kg unopened
Egg albumen 1kg unopened
Whole egg powder 5kg unopened
Herring meal 5kg approx opened
Fine oyster shell 2kg approx opened
Clo 10kg approx opened
Tiger nut meal and flour 15kg.
I'd like to give it a try and if it all goes terribly wrong, I'm not losing anything really. just need a little push in the right direction. thanks

Have a look at the sticky above, Carpforum approved boilie recipe. It's one thing having ingredients but they have to bind and roll.
Alternatively buy a ready made base mix would be my advice and have a got at home rolling first

300 semolina
300 Canary Yellow bird food (CeDe)
200 Full fat heat treated Soya Flour
150 Skimmed Milk Powder
50 WPC80
If you are just starting out I wouldn't spunk a load of money on ingredients and complicate things.
The above mix will do you just fine, very versatile. Add some eggs, Mollases and a few drops of essential oil or some spices and you are good to go.
To add another dimension to it substitute 50 of the skimmed milk powder for some brewers yeast.
All those ingredients are avaible at the supermarket, Holland &Barret, Asian supermarkets and the pet food store.
Sorry just realised youve bought your ingredients!

300 CLO
350 Herring Meal
200 Tiger Nut Flour
50 Spirulina
50 whole Egg Powder
30 Oyster Shell
20 Blood Powder
Hopefully that would roll, should do.
Go easy on the blood powder, great ingredient but can soon over power a mix!

thanks for the replies. I'm now the proud owner of those ingredients and a whole load of pigeon seed and maize that he threw in. just waiting on a boilie rolling table to arrive before I have a go at making my own.
Thanks Mark, maybe I should of asked what rates to use them but you reply has sorted that 👍.
would I need to add and liquid attractant into the mix or are those ingredients attractive enough for carp? cheers

Don't NEED to add anything else
Get the basics correct before adding or changin anything

2kg fishmeal
1 kg clo
1 kg semolina
1 kg lamlac
50 grams garlic powder
100 grams fenugreek ( ground).
That's it.
For hookbaits add 5 per cent egg albumen.

You need to listen to Dickweed below. He is speaking pure sense to you. You don't even need to really go purchase the lamlac.
You can purchase 1.5kg bags of semo from the supermarket. The human stuff is so much better than the crap that gets sold in sacks for fishing as well.
Listen to Dickweed. That will catch very well. If it does not, it's your fault fishing wise, not the boillies you have made.

Totally agree. Classic Premier style mix. Go with this one, it's a top recipe.

It's done me very proud this year since ditching the BAF Tropamino due to two separate purchases of base mixes that float.
I wonder how many other very successful bait company baits past and present are as simple ?
Once heard the savay seed mix fell in this category.

It's a classic that works, I bet the majority of us started out with 30 plus ground breaking ingredients trying to create the holy grail and ended up with a handful or two. Like a bloke once said to me quite a few years ago now, you will tell how good something is when you take it out

nowadays you can find out yourself.
In Belgium and most likely EU it is obliged to put a ingredient list on the labels ;-)

Basically this. if you want you can experiment with changing the type of fishmeal so White Fish Meal / anchovy etc with some Pre Digested.
Tbh i didnt notice much difference with or without PD the CLO makes more of a difference to the texture

I've recently received a 25kg sack from BAF Germany. I've never made my own bait before and I've rolled six 1kg batches but I've not had the opportunity to fish yet. I hope it's ok when I do.

thanks everyone for your replies, there's definitely some food for thought there (excuse the pun). and some recipes that I like the look of trying once I've got the hang getting the consistency and rolling right. just doing 1kg batches at a time for now until I fully know how I want them, trial and error. thanks again everyone for your help 👍👍

I started my bait making with a simple recipe much like dickweed's - minus the fenugreek and garlic. Caught plenty on it. Then I decided to get fancy and add loads of stuff at small quantities which, as far as I could tell, made pretty much no discernible difference at all except it was more expensive. In the end I settled on this as an all-round base;
30% LT94 fishmeal
10% Pre-digested fishmeal (I'm not convinced this doesn't wash out whilst boiling though)
20% CLO
20% Semolina
10% Lamlac
the last 10 % is for additives such as blood powder (I'd cap blood powder at 5%), paprika, fenugreek etc
It rolls well, it is easy to mix, it is cheap, and will definitely catch carp if you stick it in the right place.
Once you get an appreciation of how ingredients affect the finished boilie you'll discover ingredients which change the texture etc. Once you've learned this, you can start to deviate from a simple recipe for SPECIFIC purposes - For example, if you wanted a bait with a more rubbery texture you could substitute the semolina for soya flour (or vice versa I can't remember) in the above example recipe. If you wanted a harder bait, substitute some of the binder for egg albumen, blood powder etc
