Hello
I have joined a new water where I need to cast at distance.
Braid is banned and so are leaders so looking at the best mono line that I can use straight through.
Any suggestions?

I have the Fox exocet pro in 23lb (0.4mm) which I use when no leader is allowed. It pre stretched too so you don't get that springy feeling when giving it the beans...you might get away with the 20lb but I haven't tried it..

How are you finding the pro,is it as good as the original exocet

I've not used the original (Ive been on Gardner pro since its release but fancied trying something different after issues spooling up) but from reading that got changed at somepoint as wasn't as good as the 'original' exocet. The pro is lovely line, really supple and spools up nicely. I have found it needs 2 or 3 casts to get rid of any memory but after that it's like silk.

Surely something like a tapered mono would offer the best distance. Lomgchuch 10-30lb I've seen put 200 yards with a 13ft rod.

For me it's Gardner Pro.
And this is a quote from Terry Edmonds made in 2018 on lines he recommended then (don't forget he is now with Korda)
Line
After sorting out the technique, line will play a massive part in how far you cast. What you are looking for is the supplest line available, with controlled stretch, and strong enough to land the fish safely.
Of course, there are places where leaders are banned; this is where we have to look at level line casting (without leaders). In this situation we are looking for the balance between a line strong enough to take the shock of the cast and thin enough to cast a long way. A balance that is hard to achieve.
Also, remember; the weakest part of this set up will be the knot attaching the mainline to the rig, so good strong knots are advised. Grinner or Palomar are favourites of mine.
Line recommendations for this: the excellent Gardner pro blend, but the ESP XT non loaded version has also proved excellent.
If leaders are banned, Fox, except the tapered line version is the best available at this current time.

Tels recommended a few different mono's since then.
Tels recommended a few different mono's since then.
I fished 2 weeks ago and both the lads with longchuck had a nightmare with wind knots and frap ups..it did settle down towards the end of the weekend and after a few fish..but it put me right off..they both ended up with shock leaders on at least 1 rod.

I loved the Gardner pro in 12 or 15lb..but the XM stuff was horrible wirey stuff..it was like a completely different line.

Yeah, it's almost like it's the person casting is more important than the equipment?

Put it this way; with 3.25lb rods, Shimano 7000 XTA Beastmasters, 15lb Gardner Pro, 3.5oz lead, no leader I'm hitting 150yds on a big chuck. That has been measured over the field as someone on the syndicate didn't believe how far I could cast when I saw a fish show.

That's amazing. Well done you.

Fox Exocet is really surprisingly good, as is the tapered version if using heavier leads and going for maximum distance.
Before Exocet I was using the Gardner Pro Blend which was good too

Im hitting 160 measured with Korda subline (brown) 12lb and no leader and a 4oz lead on freespirit 13ft CTX and Shimano 14000 xtb's. I have also tried with 4.5oz and still can't crack off, but getting further with the 4oz lead.
The subline is massively under rated in terms of breaking strain..the 12lb has an actual breaking strain of just over 17 according to Tacklebox!

It's got a diameter of .36 for 12lb that's fairly thick compared to others.
Syncro xt in 12lb is around .31 and breaks around 15lb. I've just switched to the 10lb .29 and managed my best recorded cast of 175 yards. That's with a leader. I'd say I'm a very average caster personally.

I only used the 12lb on my 12ft rods and couldn't get a more than 155 yards.
Current using spods shockleader ( black braid ) really nice to cast

Right here goes....
I've hit the clip hard at 180 yards using...30lb line straight through with a 1oz lead and the rig attached, with 2 large foam nuggets stuck on,into a headwind .That's using 10ft cane rods and old school Mitchell reels.
Oh nearly forgot to mention, that was UNDERARM.
Any monty python fans can try to beat that!?

to be fair to Terry he told me about the shimano tx2s way before word got out and when he was sponsored by Harrison I think it was....I messaged him over a xmas period when a voucher code went live on ebay for 20% off and he replied pretty promptly and said buy them,he went on to say he had been launching leads a long way with them and for the price I paid after discount I think it was about £45 a rod so I bought three on his recommendation.

Other than he's never recommended anything that is shyte. Which goes to show that there's a lot of good stuff out there by lots of different companies and it's the person using it that really makes the difference.
Same could be said for so many things!

I got the 12ft 3.25 as an all rounder while I was having a 3rd torrix built to match my other 2...Great rods, I didn't need them for out and out casting as I'm a **** caster anyway but for what I paid before all the hype about them they were great...I actually sold them for more than what I paid for them a couple of years ago

Would 12lb ESP Syncro XT be adequate straight through or would I need a leader?

Leader mate. Be ok with around 3-4oz lead upto 120 yards but wouldn't want to push it anymore for safety reasons

15lb syncro is a lot more capable of dealing with the Load. But will naturally restrict you casting.
How far you looking to cast ? And are leaders banned

Around 150 Yards.
Leaders banned which is not ideal, My only other option would be a tapered line.
Was hoping 12lb would be sufficient.

And he says big casting is practice, practice and practice.
One thing I will say, what works for one person does not work for everyone.
I have a mate who gets on well with ESP line, I don't, (I cant get a tidy knot), he doesn't get on with my choice of Gardner Pro, he finds it goes crinkly on his reels (Shimano BBLC's).

Hi Nick just seen your comments on xt and gardner pro, I wonder if you mignt offer your opinion on something between the 2.
I found the xt in 12lb to be marginally stronger in knot strengths and when pulled against the pro blend in 15lb. Would this straight away make the xt the more capable of withstanding a heavy cast or does diameter play a role in this. The pro blend is 0.35 vs the xt at lower than 0.33.
Just trying to pick the best one for hitting 100yds comfortably and be the safest
Many thanks for any help

You may have a wait for nick to reply i think he is on a forum holiday
100yds isnt really a big cast and imo easily achievable with thicker mono's for instance the 15lb xt is very capable of 100yds plus and i would prefer to use that over the 12lb xt if just for the piece of mind of thicker line
Regards your question which is subjective i would prefer to use the 0.35mm pro blend over the 12lb xt for casting without leader i know of people getting big distances out of the pro blend without a leader

Thanks woody, great advice. I swapped from 10fts to 12s and with some help of Google maps I'd say with 15lb xt I may only be hitting between 80 and 90 yds max. Very frustrating but starting to think it's me rather than my kit now.
With my spod setup I can punch a lead for miles however. Not sure what's going on, it almost feels like I lose all the power from the stretch in the monos

Anyone following this thread I'd like to just make an amendment to claiming xt 12lb is stronger than gardner pro blend in 15lb. I just tested them both on 5 turn grinners to a lead free lead to a bucket of water then pulled the loose end up wrapped round a towel (and my hand)
Results were
Xt12lb - 17lb BS
Pro blend - a smidge shy of 21lb
Very impressed with both

Your trying to do what's known as level line casting. It's getting the optimum distance with big rods and leads and no leader. I currently use 13ft CTX 3.5TC with Shimano 14000 and Korda 12lb subline. No leaders a 4.25oz lead, and can step into a cast every chuck with no fear of cracking off, and hit 150-170. I also use the Korda tapered leaders at 12lb, and they can add 10-15 yds.
