Anybody own the new daiwa whisker 45 reels - are they a good, well-made reel ? - thinking of upgrading from my ultegra ci4 but never used daiwa reels before, so I am unsure

Think you may be hard pushed to get a review yet. They are only just arriving in shops i believe. Ive been trying to find out about the weight of them and not been able to as yet

Keep your Shimanos , they are the best , Diawa are good but require more service. Every tackle shop owner that I have spoken to says Shimano are the best.

I purchased some ultegra CI4s and have not been impressed with the build quality at all!
id not changed my reels for years and wish i still had my 20 year old tournies!!

This is what I've been thinking about. I have some old Biomaster XTA reels
And for the First time in my life 'fancied a change' but without any practical reason.
They have been faultless and bombproof. And never cleaned let alone serviced .
Maybe I don't have enough respect for them as they obviously didn't sell that well
And I picked them up cheap back in tbe day.
But since I've been reading about reels I a view to getting new. I can't find anything
That seems better unless you are at 4 or 500 quid plus
These Ultegras are all over the 2nd hand market.

The newer shimano reels are pretty awful imo and feel cheap. This is coming from an exclusive shimano user for 30 years
I've recently bought some new basias and think that they stand out against shimano's new offerings
Luckily i have a loft full of xsb mags and 10000xts!
Even those new fox reels feel better than a shimano power aero when used side by side and that is saying something

I admit the inner wheel baitrunner bit is a bit pointless. However I now realise its real plus. It gives you an adjustable quick drag. Only now realising that's how Ive been using them. As.many say certain drags are too quick on reels. The XTA as you set baitrunner you are really changing how many clicks on the drag.

Tbh my ultegra ci4 are the older xtb model which seem better made than the newer versions and have performed well last 6 years. The new whisker seemed a lot of spec for the money but prob stick with my ultegra

I totally agree with this .... I fell for the hype of XTB5500 (non c14) when they first came out and thought they were awful reels .... I changed them in for XTC's thinking they were a MK2 version and will be an improvement and they were worse ..... Shimano have lost the mid range market imo to any number of other brands ..... The exception would be their traditional baitrunners, i still dont think anyone else does a rear drag baitruner as good.

Are these smaller than the fox fx9s?
I'm looking to swap, I find the fx9 slightly too big for my 10ft rods.
Looked at the 5500 ultegra's and they looked slightly smaller side by side and about the size I'm looking for

The Biomaster XTA's go for decent money on auction sites, nothing less than £100 per reel in sets of 3.
Strangely enough I have Beastmaster 7000XTA's with a front baitrunner and they seem better quality than more expensive modern Shimano reels.
I know I keep saying it, but older Shimano gear is better than more modern stuff. It feels better, more workmanlike maybe, but less likely to break in your hands.

I bought two from Fishtec. On a day where 25 quid was taken of each order over 50 pounds.
They were reduced to 75. So I made 2 separate orders and got them for 50 quid a piece. 2 years later I wanted a third one and had to pay 75 quid.
Yet they have been faultless all three years.

Taking it back to the OPs question - I don't really see the point of these new Whisker reels.
For me the whisker reels should be small lightweight reels. But these are heavier (and the same size) as the Emblems.
Ci4 is a lightweight reel. If it's another light reel you're after I'd suggest the 25 Whisker would be a better option than this new 45 Whisker.

I would of said the FX9s were smaller than 5500 size Shimano. I also found both too big on 10ft rods and prefer the Okuma Inc 6000 the perfect reels for 10ft.rods

Apologies I was thinking of the 25 whiskers. Not the 45s
Yep I've been looking at 6000 and gs3000s and whisker 25s. My fox's are too big for these 10fters

I've only played with the 25 Whisker in a shop, but seemed like a good reel. You get a lot of reel for the weight, it's definitely not small.
Purely on cosmetics I prefer the Ci4, but that's v personal, know others love a bit of red on their reels.
