Getting on for a year since the latest Mags were released....how are users getting on with them?
Read a couple of reviews where it is suggested the super slow oscillation actually hampers distance with the coils being too close thus creating more friction? Could it be that the Daiwa Slow Cross Wrap would offer less friction?

Love mine,used them alot this year and been faultless.The 45mm spool certain makes a difference with distance and having owned the latest Daiwa 19,20 and the black sld the shimano is the best of them all imo

Cheers Tony, no noticeable difference between them all when going for a big chuck?
There's a direct comparison video on You Tube between the Mags and the Basia 20 45 SCW by Boscolo Sport.....unfortunately I don't speak Italian...

I can cast just as far with the tech mgs as I could the basias,if anything I would say its a smoother cast with the techs

Terry Edmunds explained this issue to me on a lesson because i used xsb mags with super slow oscilation
Because ive only ever used them and 10,000xt's, i haven't got anything to compare it to, but it makes sense

I've cast the technium 14000 xtd alongside the 1200 mgs xtb on century 13ft c2 sp .the owner of the 14000 and rods thought there was no difference in casting performance of the reels with both doing the same distance .the newer reel may be a fraction smoother on the retrieve but virtually nothing in it and the smaller 1200 looks better if that matters and time will tell but it may be the more robust reel.

No way is the 12000xtb more robust,I sold mine after only a few uses.The latest xtd feels stronger when playing a fish and does not feel like the main shaft is flexing

The mgs xtb doesn't flex with fish on and given both have the same shaft diameter the shorter stroke of the 12000 should be less prone to it. Personal opinion but I think both are superior to any of the daiwa Bastia's.

I never got on with my 12000 xtb black mags, they just felt cheap and i hated the baitrunner drag caps. They were the last shimano reel i ever bought and havent had one since.

All just opinions at the end of the day though, only tecs I've had were the original 10k which are still highly rated and the 1200 mgs xtb which better . Two people I know also have xtb's and bought the new D's but sold them on and went back to their B's. These same two also had 12ft aviator plus which some like but again sold them on and went bach to torrix te's and again I agree with them the only aviator I liked was the flex and the 13ft plus is a good alrounder .

It's all personal choice isn't it. I have the XTB mags and the XSB mags and they're the best reels I've ever owned or used. I know I won't sell either, no matter what shimano come up with next.

Finally we agree on something 😀 life would be pretty boring if we all liked the same things.
The 10000xt's were superb. There was 3 minters on ebay last wk for £1400 and i was very tempted to get them but they were the 12000 xta version with the baitrunner caps. Same reel just deeper spool and horrible baitrunner cap. They have sold now.

Not yet, still cant decide on which one to get after stumbling across bepoke bait boats pd-33. Prefer the smaller size of the sb3 mind.

Some like the baitrunner caps but I have genuine Shimano standard non baitrunner and the baitrunner drag caps for my xtb's. Someone I know has a large room full of rods, reels and a few nets that he has collected since the seventies and most of it has never been used with reels in boxes and rods still tagged and I know he has 10k xt's in there.

I've had a set of XTB MGS for about 9 years I think, bought them not long after they were released.
They have had a lot of hard use, but still work faultlessly, the bait runner 2 caps take a little getting used to but are great once set up correctly.

I had the carbon washers fitted to my XTB caps and they really are spot on. I'm joking a bit about the XTD's. They look really good to be fair, it's just I wouldn't want to change. You can all remind me about this in 2 years time when you see me posting a picture of my setup with a set of XTD's

And there we differ as I love the standard felt washers as the drag is butter smooth and the standard non baitrunner caps are so progressive to adjust, a full turn from completely slack to locked up this is the best drag I've had on any reel except twin powers.

I did a day with Terry myself and he said that the reel and line lay make very little difference to casting performance far more important factors. His biggest casts ever have been done on a windcast and ultergra which are both at the lower end of the cost scale. I personally think the 100 turn oscillation of the mags is just there as a marketing tool and a reason to justify the higher price, nightmare to line your handles up to
. Even If you compare a power aero ( I think the best value reel currently ) and mag what are you getting in performance for twice the price other than 5 or 10 gram weight saving and a magnesium body .

I had carbon washers put in mine and thought it totally ruined the drag as it was like 1/4 of a turn from free spool to to tight so i had no control. Its was like one click and it was to much either way. I should of left them with the original washers in.

Yes i tried that with a set of ci4 xtb's it totally ruins them far to quick it was something like 3 clicks from locked to free spool, i would only use carbon type washers with a standard drag cap.
Even when i fitted carbon washers to some of my xt techs i thought they were to quick with the standard cap (which doesn't have a spring in ) and only got them nice or at least nice for me by fitting a spring in the spool cap

I might get four XTDs at some point for my french kit ... but I wanted to see what they were like first.
I was even going to sell three of my spare/boxed XTBs to finance it...but then I saw posts where people said the XTDs were a bit 'plasticky'...and having seen the XTCs (and not bought them) I believed maybe XTB was the last of the quality builds.
Since then, however, I have fished with a mate who has 3 of the XTDs. They look nice, and I don't think they are too plasticky...although he has had that plastic bit around the back of the spool break and had to get it replaced...and he does look after his gear, and it happened on his first trip out!? (I am sure that's the bit that broke, I can ask him if that helps...just in case anyone else has suffered the same)
I am sure they'll still be some left to buy this year, I don't think using my faithful old XTBs is going to cost me any fish...so I will wait a bit longer.
