I currently own the Shimano Ci4 10000 Ultegras. Looking to change reel. Been looking at Daiwa's. So many wondering which one.
I replaced my 5500 Xtd with the new Daiwa 21 emblem 45 scw qd sd, the Daiwa is a far better reel i use them under my 10ft rods.
Have used the spare spool, the standard is 0.35/700m
First wanted to buy the new Ultegra 14000 XTE but was not impressed with it in the store

I own basia slds, as much as they are nice reels, im not sure they are worth the extra over the emblems. If i was buying again id save myself £600 and get the emblems.

I would echo what The-Heff has said the newer emblems are worth a look I have a set of Basia's and newer Emblems and they perform just as well in my opinion one touch folding handle is a bonus when packing them away.

I have a set of basia customs which I saved hard for and I'm now looking to get them customised next year had quotes already but wouldn't swap them for anything else,always wanted a set of basia's and with any good brand they should last a lifetime

I have Basia SLDs and love them. Super light, super smooth, casting is a dream. They also look the nuts. Use an Ultegra spod reel, which is also great. They're very different too.
Somehow because the SLD is so focused on being low weight, the Ultegra feels more solid. The main example of this that I really notice is the dial of the clutch (not the mechanism but the physical clutch dial), the SLDs is basically just a very light piece of plastic and can feel a bit flimsy, while the Ultegra spod's seems to be largely metal coated in plastic - it is much heavier and feels much more solid. Personally think the Ultegra's feels much nicer to turn and fit than the SLDs dial. The actual clutch mechanism of the SLD is lovely however and the quick drag works very well.
SLD is like a stripped down track car, all carbon fibre, no aircon and no spare seats in the pursuit of speed. That might be just the ticket, or you might prefer a less sporty model with some of the option list ticked.

I think the sld is more focused on being a bit tougher, than light as such. It is light yeah, but feels a lot more solid than some other basia models.
And im not surprised your spod reel feels more robust, to stick with the car analogies, im sure a truck would deal with crashing through a wall far better that a sports car would.

Had most of the top end reels in the last few years and out of the basia's the sld was the one I would have again.

Theres no new reels i fancy these days, which is no good as i love buying reels. Saves me a fortune i suppose. All the good ones are discontinued now.
Why do people keep saying new reels are not as good as older ones. Technology advances. Perhaps the people who make the decisions about reel design are getting feedback from the wrong group of people. Surely the demand for more distance has led to the current trend for less weight at all cost.

Technology dosent always improve things. Its all penny pinching using plastic parts instead of metal parts. Nothing is built to last these days. Its not just reels it everything. I used to have a phillips electric razor for 10 years, all metal components and it only died as the internal battery gave up. Bought the current model 2 months ago and its broke already. All plastic parts that used to be metal. Its all cost cutting to improve profits. I remember speaking to garry at custom reels years ago and he said all the modern reels are using inferior internals that arent built to last.

Shimano reels from the 1990's to early 2000's are far better than more modern Shimano reels from 2010. Build quality, feel, longevity and materials.
Technology may have moved onwards and modernised, but metal lasts longer than plastic. Even the metal bits don't seem as strong.
I had 3 Baitrunner AeroGTE 4000's from 1995 which took all of my abuse until they were stolen in 2002.
The DL10000's I got in 2015 just didn't last; one a handle broke, another one a bent central pin has bent, they just don't feel as nice.
Strangely, the best quality reels I have found in the Shimano range is actually the budget stuff. My 7000XTA Beastmasters are nicer to use than reels costing twice as much. It MAY be that they use cheaper metal technology, materials that are older, not as modern as the current plastic.
I also think that reel manufacturers have gotten into the 'regular upgrade' or buy new tackle mindset. Your Mitchell's, Abu Cardinals lasted for years, you bought reels for life, whereas now manufacturers WANT you to buy new every few years. It's like your washing machine, 5 year warranty, 2 months after it expires, the machine dies, so you buy a new one.

You dont need to tell me, i dont buy new reels other than my daiwa certates but they are in another league altogether. I paid over the odds for a brand new discontinued daiwa castizm a couple of weeks ago as the new version is dog ****.

Totally agree. The market has become a never ending cycle of new paint jobs and adding/changing a few letters. Look at the number of Basias, Techs and Ultegras that have been released over the past 10 years and some people have tried them all!
The last new set of reels I bought were the Penn Affinity 7000. The titanium shaft sold them to me and approaching 10 years on they have been spot on. I'm up to 6 and use them for spod and marker work too. On my longer rods I have 6000t and on my small water rods I use Aero 8000 GTE bait runners. I don't know if I'll ever buy another set of reels (in all honesty I also have more bait runners, a set of SS2600 and a set of 5000ts), but if I did it would have to be something pretty special to buy something new.

I have had numerous reels over the years some very expensive ones also .
I sold my power Aeros and my 5000 tournaments and my shimano mgs and a few others and settled on these 3
Penn the first offering as they cast very good are smooth and have a bail arm lock for the big Chuck .
I have used these for the last 6 years and can't fault them .
For general fishing the shimano baby big pits again no fault whatsoever
For puddle fishing cardinal 57 and 55 again used these the last 30 years , again these are bullit proof .
Why the need to chop and change is beyond me but if it floats your boat why not .

But the new version is the same reel internally with external cosmetic changes ie folding handle and the original mag seal is flawed allowing water ingress requiring regular service checks .two of the four I had I sold vertualy unused ,the other two were serviced and had water ingress so sold after the service and I bought emcast 25a's at a fraction of the price which have a better drog .

They are not the same reels so do your homework first. Open them up put them side by side and you will see they are not the same.
The original castizm has daiwas reel four concept the same as the basiair, original iso, top of the range £1000 exsist and certate models, the rotor is also made of a different material, the new whisker 25qd is nothing like it other than its the same size and shape. Ive had castizms since they came out 5 in total none have ever missed a beat and they were used on a flooded trent with 6oz leads. The 3 i sold are still getting abused now by my mate and guess what they have never missed a beat either and none of them have been serviced. I have 10 daiwa magsealed reels, 4 castizms, 4 certates and 2 of the new tournament 20 match reels and not one has less me down so thats 100% reliability.
