Fishing a snaggy weedy lake,need braided mainline as mono just isn't cutting it for me wondering what's the best mainline

Personal preference, will depend on how you want to fish the venue. If its really that weedy/snaggy chances are it will be fishing close in unless a boat is available in case a fish gets snagged.

No boat on the lake which is stupid lost a good fish at 17 raps yesterday just couldn't move it tried for hours slack line etc

As said... Depends somewhat on circumstances, but after using braid for 20 years, my views:
If you want a heavy sinking braid and don't need to cast beyond 80 yards or so... Thinking SBX
If requiring a sinking braid that you might need to cast over 100 yards... Avid Camo.
If you feel the circumstances dictate a neutral buoyancy/floating braid (beware autumnal floating weed beds) then good old Power Pro in 50lb.
Everyone has probably got different thoughts, but thats my mine anyway!

Funnily enough I've been looking into this a lot recently but from a predator fishing perspective. There's loads of reviews on YouTube but a constant that keeps cropping up is as NW said, Power Pro seems to be very well regarded. Coated braids aren't that well liked for snag fishing as the coating tends to bead on the line creating casting problems.
Diameter of braid seems more important than stated strength as the larger the more resistant in general, again there are loads of tests on YT.
The general rule of thumb seems to be use the same diameter braid as you would mono for the given situation, which could be difficult in Carp fishing casting wise unless using a boat

My venue is solid with weed and no boats so for me it's irresponsible to fish anything other than close in whare I know I can land a fish. I've been fishing 20lb mono with running rigs with tight lines using titanium short arm indicators but have just spooled one reel with the thinking anglers sbx suggested. I've seen a fish show at range in the out of bounds area that I could cast to but the weed between me and the fish fish make it impossible to land it safely so I'm not prepared to chance it. Hope that one the op lost can free itself.

Yes very frustrating was ages up high ground right line then waded in to the right& left then left it slack just nothing fish was on as spool would still tick now & again we have no boat on there & now apparently braided mainline is not allowed

Could invest some time in clearing some of the weed with a weed rake? Even with braided line you won't just pull the fish through the weed it will still be stuck if there's that much of it.

If not fishing far out, I think Gardner noir is decent. Think as fook at I think around .40 so distance fishing imo isn't achievable, but does sink quite well for a braid

With the increase in weed infested lakes myself and most of my friends have converted to braid over the years.Although we haven't used the avid braid mentioned earlier,due to knot strength and sink rates we have all ended up using the gardener hydro sink or the thinking anglers braid.
The 100% most critical part of fishing weed is for the lead to discharge asap.This means a helicopter type system with a rotten bottom,a plastic ‘C' clip or the Korda heli-safe.
If a tubing/ lead clip must be used I simply PVA the clip instead of pushing the sleeve on.

I noticed a well know angler spooled up with a well known brand , and enquired his thoughts , he told me 👍 and to go with the heavier breaking strain , and I loaded up 3 reels. It was ok , caught fish on it and loved the feeling , but it seemed a bit thick, not really sinking as I thought it should , and after seeing said " well known angler" on video spooling up with a different brand all together I went with a more fishing/casting friendly one 🙄.

A few years ago I was recommended to use braid for pike fishing so I went with the diameter of braid I use in mono, which worked out as 40lb. Had a few problems with it, (Power Pro), so went up to 0.37mm in AngryFish 4x PE braid.
Not had a problem since with it on my Spod/Marker rod or my Pike Rods.
For Carp fishing, I would say use a leader, or cover the last metre or so in tubing.

I have been using braid mainline in recent times due to the proximity of the snags that I have been fishing near. I have been using Gardner hydro tough 30lb. When new I found it did the job well and a simple palomar knot was suitable for most applications. Unfortunately after only a handful of uses I find that the fibres can part inside the knot structure and I can break it when testing a knot. I am in the process of respooling with an alternative .... some mates have been using the Thinking Anglers sbx and that is what I will replace it with. It is 40lb and greater diameter.
I am happy to fish mono in weed (synchro xt) but at 50yds range, to snags, the stretch of mono is huge.
It is proving to be an expensive exercise!!!
